Ugh - just finally made silver on United, and was hoping to move my seat on an existing reservation to the economy plus area, as I had done many times on Continental. Just found out that United has changed this, and I have to wait until the day of the flight to move. Also, I can't move my husband and son, only 1 extra person. True bummer.
Since the back of the plane is almost sold out, there's no way those front of cabin seats will be available anyway.....

Old news. But, keep your head up. Exit rows are an option (outside your son, who can sit in the row ahead of you?), and the E+ seats WILL open up as folks are upgraded out of them.

Congratulations as well. The thread suggested by HaveMiles is excellent and well worth reading. Good luck on moving up - some seats do open up as higher status flyers get dragged up into the pointy end.

If they offer attractive E+ seats at check-in you will then have to determine if paying for the third member of your party to move up is worthwhile. I think there are times when this is reasonable. Otherwise if the three of you are together in E and none of you is over six feet tall, then just be happy :).

Thanks everyone. I ended up getting us all into Economy Plus via a nice phone rep. Woot!
I was originally automatically upgraded to first, but didn't feel right leaving the rest of my family in coach. It was the perfect compromise.

I would have complained to them that "United made me move, darn it! I tried, but they won't let me change it back." Then again, I do have two divorces in my history. ;)

There's a reason he's divorced twice. If you value your SO or the family I wouldn't alienate them like that. :)
