Recently, whenever I use an e-upgrade, I am unable to complete OLCI.

The reason, I'm told, is that there are two reservations on "the system" - one for my original economy seat, and one for the J seat. If I call into the SE desk, they clear it up and I'm able to check in.

Is this always the case? Is there a way around it?

IME, Not always the case an upgraded reservation will show both the Y and J show; always the case that if it shows both Y and J, you need to call and get the file cleaned up.

I believe this has happened to me when I have not chosen my J seat yet.

Happened to me yesterday, and I'd already selected 1A. Fortunately I had lots of time to check in at YYZ.

Happens to me perhaps one time out of six. Fortunately, this situation is old hat, so far as the SE-line agents are concerned, and it takes but a simple snap of their fingers and the file is sparkling clean. Seat 1D is once again my happy aerial nest.

Its only an issue if you are cutting it close and planning to skip the SE line
