The Dunkin’ Donuts loyalty program is going mobile.

Parent company Dunkin’ Brands unveiled the rollout of its new “DD Perks” loyalty program during its latest earnings call with analysts on Thursday. The program essentially replaces an existing one that involved using a Dunkin’ Donuts card and coupons for rewards that were either mailed, or emailed to be printed out.

Canton-based Dunkin’ is phasing out this version of the loyalty program, which started in 2011, with a new one that is focused on the chain’s smart phone app. (A spokeswoman says you can still use the card.) Consumers who pay with their Dunkin’ app at the register will be able to rack up points — five points for every dollar they spend. For 200 points (or $40 of spending), they’ll get a free medium beverage. John Costello, president of global marketing and innovation for parent company Dunkin’ Brands, tells me that other rewards will eventually be sent to participating customers, tailored to their spending habits.

If you subscribe to their mobile app program, you will receive coupons like the one below from DD every month. And you always get a free drink on your birthday (month/day)! Below is a (very) partial screenshot taken from an email received from DD:

This is one the best moves by the company ever, if you look over the last Starbucks earning call, they mention about the massive MSR usage which is phone based. There are many possibilities for expansion and revenue generation for this platform.
