I haven't seen any of the show, but I have friends who absolutely love it. It's on my to-do list.

Strange that A Bronx Tale, The Warriors, The Bronx is Burning and Rumble in the Bronx never really had this type of impact for The BX.

    I wonder why?

    Bronx accents
Bronx accents are not considered quaint in the USA.

Nice - I sent it to my sister for her to contemplate for her next trip over - we've gone to see many houses and castles here!

So what you mean is people from the U.K. don't find Bronx accents as appealing as Americans do with downtown abbey accents?

    Interesting hypothesis.

I think it may have to do with the natural beauty portrayed in the movies makes The Bronx a bit overwhelming for viewers.

I'll admit I had never heard of Downton Abbey until today. And it was from XKCD, not MP.

My total ignorance of pop culture is probably why I don't get invited to the cool kids' parties.

Probably more likely the old people high tea...

Since we're admitting things here: I will admit that I had never heard of it either until I read this article a few weeks ago:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/02/b...s-to-reach-wider-audience.html?pagewanted=all

And then I started seeing PBS TV commercials on the other channels for the second season.

I should also admit that I am a big fan of most PBS programming, but I don't generally watch their fiction stuff . Not because I think it's bad, but out of lack of time. Still it surprised me that I had never come across it while watching the likes of Nova, Nature, Frontline or Globe Trekker.

same here. we've see a lot of places she never thought to go being "native". LOL! though usually i find out about some UK actor who is in some play or something, then i tell her to get us tickets. currently i seem to be "addicted" to Panto. in my defense, us "yanks" don't have anything like and it is just awesome silly fun. saw two different ones this January. :D

three fandoms collide. LOL! do note that the Sherlock in this cartoon is Benedict Cumberbatch/BBC Sherlock and NOT Robert Downey Jr's version. (the former is far superior to the latter but YMMV)

sorry that is so big, i am not sure how to shrink its size.

Downey Jr. Sherlock is an action superhero, WTF?

I will admit that I haven't watched Abbey but I did watch & enjoy Upstairs Downstairs miniseries PBS had on this year.

while i agree that Downey Jr's Sherlock was an action superhero, mastered a British accent very well and was correctly quirky in his portrayal, the Cumberbatch Sherlock is IMO superior. i HIGHLY recommend catching the BBC version. you can watch Series One on Netflix or whatever is available to you. series two just aired in the UK and was so intensely brilliant that i cannot imagine where they will go in the next series.

Downton Abbey is a compelling look at the way things were, in a time most of us have never seen. visually stunning sets and costumes make it a good period piece.
