Amazing that the US still keeps up that embargo. Good that it is slowly, very slowly, being revoked.

Apparently, service from ORD started this past Friday, Nov 26. They expect weekly Friday flights, with Monday flights added in January 2012.

It isn't really. President Obama has just removed restrictions that Bush #2 introduced. Still can't spend money in Cuba without government approval if you are US citizen or resident. The number of gateways that flights can take off from doesn't really matter much IMO.

By the way, I thought OAK was on the list as well? http://articles.sfgate.com/2011-06-09/news/29637105_1_cuba-travel-services-oakland-airport-flights

    Not only cigars.

  7. Actually I think you can. At least that was what I was told by a customs officer a few years ago when my Cubans I was bringing back from Mexico were confiscated. I was told the ban was on cigars purchased from countries other than Cuba and that if you bought them in Cuba you were allowed to carry them in. Catch 22, though, American citizens were not allowed to travel to Cuba. That was the gotcha. Maybe the rule has changed.

How did the customs officer know your cigars were Cuban cigars? (please don't tell me you left the wrappers on or kept them in the box w/Cuban identification)
Agreed, you still must have special permission as part of an educational or religious group booked in with whatever charter company is running the flights from your closest Cuba-approved airport.

I don't think there has ever been a ban on travel to Cuba. You just can't spend money there if you are a US citizen or LPR. Which makes it somewhat difficult to visit the country. Exception from the "spend money" prohibition are granted for certain travel programs. Even then, though, you are apparently still not allowed to bring back Cuban cigars, or for that matter most other Cuban products.

As a non-smoker, the cigar issue is really a non-issue for me.

Forget the cigars. I'd like to bring back '57 Chevys.

agreed (although I do enjoy a cigar every year or so), a buddy of mine on his stint in India had thought about taking the old British motorcyles & refurbing them for resale in the U.S. I was bummed he never did go through with it.
