My friend just texted me and said she's on a UA B787 LAX-IAH (UA1694), at first I thought maybe it's a reposition, but LAX is not a UA hub. Is UA using 787's for domestic flights? Is the new AA going to do the same??? That would be sweet!!

During the first few months, yes, the 787s are run on domestic routes.

BTW, it would be news to UA that LAX is not one of their hubs.

JL and NH did the same when they first received their 787s, and LO is currently running their new 787 on short haul routes as well (I have a friend in PRG who took a flight to WAW on it). Very common practice.

I guess it makes sense to keep them over land to get the kinks out.

The LAX hub is news to me:eek: I assume they picked it up in the merger since SFO is 300 miles north? I'm learning so much tonight!!

UA considered LAX a hub before the merger. For CO it was their second largest non-hub operation by passengers. Not all that surprising that it is still a hub.

LAX and SFO were always UA hubs

    Boeing 787s

We have plans to acquire 42 state-of-the-art 787 Dreamliners, which are currently scheduled to be delivered starting in late 2014

However, this page doesn't list it:

I'm doing an LAX-IAH-MIA routing on UA in a couple of weeks in order to try the 787...so I sure hope they keep that LAX-IAH segment!

These land trials are the only way I'll get to experience it. I don't do any long range international flights. I've always wanted to go to Japan so maybe I'll see JAL's.

I have finally obtained AMR clarification on B787-9. They did not have a B787-9 order as of December 7, but did have an MOU, the MOU conditioned on obtaining pilots union concessions. Those concessions were fulfilled when the pilots accepted the new contract. Thus on Boeings backlog AMR appears because the airplanes are still on track to be delivered, although likely somewhat late. Whether the entire order plus options will happen as planned still is not disclosed but probably will be in the next few days or weeks. BTW, anybody seriously nuts about B787 should monitor All things 787, link below. I'm addicted to it.
The AMR regulatory filing in October disclosing delivery delays:

ANA also flies it on a couple routes between the USA and Japan. And United will (theoretically) starting in 2013.

    I agree with:
There are some very good deals to be had so go! Getting around is easy too because of the magnificent public transport system going everywhere.

Thanks! I'll try to get there before I leave California to keep flight times and cost down.
It'll have to be a OW carrier, I need the miles :) A few days in San Diego before/after will be a bonus!

You're planning on taking the JL 787 to/from NRT? We should have a mini-do. The San Diego Community forum over on FT is happy to arrange a small do whenever anyone wanders through; we should have a joint one.

BTW, I went to Japan for a weekend just to fly the 787 when JL launched it. I always like visiting Japan, and the 787 is a nice plane. I really noticed the higher air pressure and humidity.

To simplify things, get a Suica card, which is a stored-value card good for all the different subway lines, most operated by different companies. It makes it very easy since you don't need to worry about what the fare is or which ticket to get. You just tap the card to enter and exit. For an even better deal, get the package of round-trip Narita Express tickets plus a Suica card Pre-loaded with money. You save a lot! It's only available to foreigners so show your passport. You can get it at the JR station in NRT where you get your ticket for the Narita Express.
