Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. said Sunday that it sent a letter to fellow rental car companies Hertz Global Holdings Inc. and Avis Budget Group Inc. asking them for their best and final offers to acquire the company in hopes of ending a drawn-out bidding war.

Avis is also currently buying Avis Europe in a $1B deal. (I didn't know that they didn't already own Avis Europe).

Don't really like the idea of this merger as it significantly reduces competition.

Dollar/Thrifty was never competition for me. At least there is still Payless!

    They should just split them....

Avis/Budget gets Dollar.... Hertz (which owns Advantage) gets Thrifty... and Enterprise stays with its subbrands National & Alamo...

So now everyone gets 3 brands and we're even lol :)

I have saved a few hundred dollars this year alone (with maybe 10 rentals) by going with Dollar when Hertz (my go-to agency) and the rest of the gang wanted outrageous rates. Had to go to the counter instead of using Gold aisle but was overall happy.

Of course, this thread is nearly a year old, and the Oct 2011 article is no longer accurate. The following thread has the more current status...

Hertz to buy car hire rival
