Do you have a link to the US executives' emails?

I can't link it right now, but the LA Times article and DOJ complaint referencing them should be readily searchable.

His GC is taking him out to the woodshed and telling him to be more careful what he writes.

Meanwhile his board should be questioning his judgment

Honest question - if the merger fails, anyone think Dougie's job could be in jeopardy?

His job is in jeopardy, period. DOJ will almost certainly insist he step down and not run AA as part of any terms of settlement to clear the merger.

Where is Gordon when we need him? It won't happen but wouldn't that just be AMAZING?

One Friday afternoon about three weeks ago, he was sitting next to me getting his shoes shined in Terminal C at IAH. ;)

I would not like to be Doug or Scooter if one of the conditions for approval of the merger is that someone ELSE has to lead.....that would hurt...and I am hearing that might be a possibility!

Don't cry for them, they'd get golden parachutes. And IMHO, unless the case goes to trial and the government straight up loses, Doug will not be leading the new American Airlines.

Which means the merger probably won't happen, since Dougie won't want to play if he's not captain of the team. :D

Does DOJ have a precedent of making personnel conditions like this?

Wow, some of those emails are stunning. Though not necessarily illegal if they are all inside US. It does show how competition works and how fewer competitors definitely means less competition.

While I don't have a hard and fast view on whether this merger should be approved - and AA & US will hurt if it is not - I think DOJ is on to something to say that dropping from 4 to 3 network carriers is a meaningful shift in the landscape - 3 network carriers is oligopoly territory, and most of the rest of the industry competes in fringes - whether the ULCCs, or niche players like VX & AS & B6 - and then there's WN which is in kind of a unique nice with no assigned seating, no F or lounges, no RJs...

AA and US may have just been the ones without a seat when the music stopped.

The DOJ frequently conditions civil settlements and criminal plea bargains on the resignation of actors central to the offending activity. It's not at all unusual, and here, might be the only logical and acceptable position for the DOJ to take.

And new American would not suffer from having a new executive, not connected to the legacy of either airline, at the helm. If anything, its a plus to have someone not steeped in the managerial mindset of either airline making decisions based on what's best for the new company rather than fighting to preserve the M.O. of its legacy components.

I dunno ... blend two such similar airline cultures as AA & HP, with a little legacy US, led by a non-industry exec, what could possibly go wrong?

Maybe the combined entity will hire Mr. Smisek away from COdbaUA. :D

(Ducks, then quickly moves to undisclosed location to avoid retributions from HG)

If the merger does go thru, as a lifetime AA devotee I can only hope Dougie 'cut cost' is not part of the senior management.

Was Dougie part of UA before US? I'm aware of the US-AA merger, but is UA involved also? The forum this is in confused me.

He tried to be part of UA. Dougie tried really hard to buy it, even getting into merger talks (twice?), before Jeff swiped UA for himself and left Dougie empty handed and complaining loudly to anyone who would listen that UA board never treated him seriously.
