My intercontinental upgrade request cleared overnight, but the flight still shows no R space, just like yesterday. However, the number of PN seats may have gone down. And there are only 5 biz revenue seats available for a flight 8 days away. So....did UA pull from PN, or was R made momentarily available and then withdrawn?

Certainly they don't seem to pull from PN for domestic itineraries, which frequently fail to clear.....

My understanding: R is for RPUs/GPUs, but Global Services can pull from P as a benefit. P gets filled from discount first fares, too. I'll book an A ticket and certain segments will says "United First (P)".

Global Services GPU clearance comes from PN. Plat/1K clearance for RPUs comes from R (1K GPU clearance is the same).

If it happened overnight, it's likely that R briefly opened and the sweep to clear GPUs ran immediately after and R returned to 0.

Thanks....I'd love to know their algorithms for briefly opening R inventory. BTW, is it possible to waitlist a miles-based upgrade? How much time do you get to pay the fee if the fare basis is sub-B?

LOL! Wouldnt we all love to know the algorithms!

Yes you can wait list for miles-based upgrade.
Fees would be due at the moment you decide you wanted to wait list.

Don't *necessarily* think of it as "briefly opening inventory" (although it's possible that they may sometimes do this). Think of it as "opening inventory, which is then immediately taken up". R opened up. Your waitlisted upgrade cleared, taking the R space. Because of the reduction in available seats on the plane, PN may have also gone down at this point (or may not have).

Yes, of course. Careful tracking is needed for any miles or $ transaction involving UA. :D

Yup. And when the system is working properly the "R" inventory never actually shows up visible to customers because any waitlisted upgrades which could consume that inventory are processed as part of the inventory change.
