I have to fly into Shanghai at about noon and have about 11 hour layover before my connecting flight lelaves. Since I am in Shanghai monthly, there is nothing I really want to do except maybe watch English speaking TV.

So does Starwood have day rates? Are they considered eligible stays?

Yes, Starwood has day rates, and they are eligible stays. It would count as a stay credit and a night credit.

You can contact SPG to inquire about day rates, or you can call the hotel directly. I've seen day rates available online for only a few hotels.

Edited: List moved from Post #17.

Some properties that are known to offer Day Room Rates:
Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel and Conference Center
    Sheraton Brussels Airport Hotel
Sheraton Club des Pins Resort and Towers
Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel & Conference Centre
    Sheraton Frankfurt Congress Hotel
    Sheraton Heathrow Hotel
    Sheraton Jeddah Hotel
Sheraton Milan Malpensa Airport Hotel & Conference Centre
    Sheraton Miramar Resort El Gouna
Sheraton Paris Airport Hotel & Conference Centre
    Sheraton Pretoria Hotel
Sheraton Roma Hotel & Conference Center
    Sheraton Soma Bay Resort

I don't think every Starwood hotel has a day rate. It's most likely to be found in hotels near airports. Also, be sure to verify the conditions of when the room would be available for you and when you must check out.

I assume you know the logistics of getting from the airport to Shanghai and how much time to allow.

How are the day rates in comparision to the regular rates? Or is it an each individual hotel sets its own rates kind of thing?

I don't that is completely correct either. IIRC people need to contact the in-house reservations or sales department of the property interested in to inquire about day rates.

In our experience day rates are not much lower than overnight rates!;)
Indeed, day rates are most likely on offer at airport hotels or near airports!;)

In most cases, yes, call the property.

The Sheraton Heathrow is an example that commonly has Day Rates bookable online. See their Special Offers page.

Here's a sample rate description for their GBP 49.00 day rate on May 10, 2011:
"RATE FOR DAY USE ONLY. NOT FOR OVERNIGHT STAYS. CHECK IN AND CHECK OUT SAME DAY.. DAY USE ONLY AVAILABLE 0900 UNTIL 1800 SAMEDAY CHECKOUT."

That's half the price of their non-refundable overnight rate that same night. But the pricing is up to each hotel, so don't always expect such a discount.

The only place I`ve seen day rates advertised actively is at airport hotels (like SC Fliers Sheraton Heathrow example) but I believe all SPG hotel`s (probably ex. resorts) have them however you would have to enquiry directly with them to find out the rate and book.

I thought that the official line was that it's a stay but not a night (though YMMV in terms of getting a night credit)

You're correct. Day rates = stay credit. Day rates night credit.

EDIT: Wrong....SPG Champion corrects this further down.

From what I understand, this changed a couple years ago to also include a night credit. SPG Champion, can you confirm?

Yes. A day rate counts both as a stay and a night.

I've been looking for one in Kansas City and it's a no go even at the 4 points at the airport. Seems as if there is a day rate but it is not loaded into the system for use. Not really sure how to call sales/reservations if the hotel is large enough to have them in house and try and negotiate the rate.

I don't understand this statement. Do you mean that this hotel advertises a day rate?

Just call the hotel and ask to speak to their in house sales office; stress that you do not want the Starwood central reservations line. You might have to leave a message or voicemail and wait for them to call you back. If they resist or say there's no day rate, you can ask to speak to their sales manager or even general manager. This would be most effective if you're a previous guest at the property or can credibly promise them future business. A lot of hotels are willing to do things to get additional revenue these days.

When I call the reservation line it shows that there is a day rate at the hotel, but it is never available.

This may work for a larger hotel, but it seems as if 4 Points and Aloft hotels do not have anyone to talk with about this. I tried to explain to them that I would stop in a minimum of two times a week and would be open to doing a pre-paid non-refundable rate. I've actually found when calling these hotels the front desk staff to be fairly rude when asking if they have a day rate. I ask if there is a manager or someone in sales that I could talk to about this and they act as if I'm being rude for not taking their word for it.

Wold you be willing to pay a cheap "night" rate in exchange for early (specify) guaranteed occupancy with the understanding that yo will leave by some specified time? You need to talk with someone with authority to negotiate at the property. Just ask for the sales director or general manager and don't discuss why you want to talk to that person with phone operators. Alternatively, will the Plat (if you are) concierge call someone in authority at the hotel for you? If you're in the city in question, have you tried stopping by the hotel in person during prime business hours, ideally at a time when the hotel isn't too busy?
