I am not familiar with AA system, doing MR in Jan to reach ExPlat was wondering if AA has similar upgrade system like UA CR-1 so my good AA friends will feel pity on me and help me out to seat in the front :)

Thank you for your AA information.

Nothing like that. Tradeoff is we get 8 systemwides at 100K good on all published fares. Now, if you are flying with an AA flyer with 500 mile upgrades in account on the same flight, they could upgrade you. Those never expire as long as your AA account is active.

Yes, I am flying SFO-ORD on the 7th. I'm holding onto my 500 milers for when the day comes that I'm no longer EXP.

I thought Companion upgrades were complementary, I did not realize you needed to use 500 milers on the companion. Do you still earn 500 milers even as EXP?

Unfortunately, companion upgrades are never complimentary (unless your companion is EXP or on a full fare).
    No.

Oh wow I did not realize that. The explanation on the web site and in the EXP member guide is not very clear on either topic at all.

I believe there is one obscure scenario when the EXP's companion is on a full fare the companion upgrade is complimentary.

It isn't always terribly clear, but the information is there. The AA Elite Status Benefits chart does indicate that only Platinums and Golds receive "earned upgrades", and the detailed 500 Mile Upgrades page linked from there does spell it out more clearly:

The absence of companion upgrade for top level flyers is one of the most disappointing features of AAdvantage.

Perhaps you mean the absence of complimentary companion upgrades?

Even though you don't get an equivalent of the CR-1, you should attain a noticeably higher percentage of upgrades on AA as an EXP.

No doubt that doesn't solve the issue of upgrading a companion. It would be nice if AA gave EXPs a small number of 500-milers each year to help with companion upgrades. But, you can always purchase 500-milers to upgrade companions with. This is consistent with AA's philosophy of charging for upgrades at lower levels.

I've had good success using CR-1s on UA and with clearing companions using 500-milers. With a family of 4, I actually prefer the AA model where I can buy as many 500-milers as I want each year for companion upgrades as opposed to a limited amount of CR-1s.

You can buy 500-mile upgrades for $30 each. If flying with a companion who is upgrading you with his 500-milers, you could slip him $30 for each one that he used to upgrade you.

In addition EXP's mostly seem to have a good many 500-mile upgrades from long past days when everyone had them. I still have 108 of them, which i do use sometimes to help out travel companions.

I've been there...and had right around that number accumulated for a few years when I did only international travel (was staffed and lived abroad). However, I have a bit more than half of that left now after having to endure a couple of years as PLT before becoming EXP again.

Not uncommon for those that primarily fly internationally. Early on I used to burn through stickers faster than I could earn them, then when I started splitting time between Seattle and London they started stacking up much faster.

Good point. Just a bit surprised at the number, since I don't think I've ever had more than 20.

Agree! I'll be EXP after my 7500 miler on AA in the back. Maybe AA wants to be generous with an op-up to this plat!

There were a lot of assumptions :) Didn't spell that out.

If someone is going from zilch to Exp on the ORD-SFO TEQM fares, ~33K BIS miles will be enough to get EXP under the TEQM promo

Will start earning stickers only after they hit Gold (~8K BIS miles) flying 25K BIS more will only earn 8 more stickers.
