Does a Companion on an Award Ticket Quailfy as a Companion Upgrade?

  1. Can't find any clear answer on the delta website, so I thought I'd ask my experts here.
Taking my hubby BIL-ALB-YHZ-BIL for his 50th. FC on miles is 120,000, Coach is 60,000. I'm going to book myself a coach ticket (on miles), but should I book his FC? Would he qualify for a companion upgrade if we are both on the same PNR? Its still a ways out, but it looks like the back of the planes are full, lots of availability in both FC and in the preferred seats.

Any insight would be appreciated. I have all combination of awards on hold right now (Finally got the website to cooperate on a multi-leg journey!) ;)

For free upgrades on DL, both the elite and the companion must be travelling on tickets paid with money. If either of you is on an award ticket, there will be no companion upgrade, even though elites on award tickets are eligible for free upgrades.
