If I get upgraded to Business, does that allow me access to the Admiral's Club as AA Gold?

    Depends on the route.

Itineraries with international business class segment (as defined by AA, not geography)? Yes.

Transcon upgrade on JFK-LAX-SFO or MIA-LAX three class planes? Yes.

    Purely domestic itinerary upgrades? No.

Right, AA does not view Canada as an "international" destination. You can always buy a day pass if you really want to check it out. My opinion is that the YYZ club isn't worth the $50.

I agree, not worth the $50. Funny thing is, if your flying Biz class on AC, you get MLL access. Maybe AA can learn a thing or two here.

I'm willing to bet AA is not completely unaware that AC or other competitors offer lounge access on some routes they don't. Maybe AA will change the access policy in the future, but for now it seems they're happy with the rules since they've been in place for a very long time. They did modify access rules recently, but only for the transcon routes JFK-LAX-SFO and MIA-LAX.

I got an upgrade to first on a domestic flight but still had to pay to get in.

Which is exactly what I said. ;)

His question was "do I get access if I'm upgraded?"

So for domestic flights - no.

UA treats Canada and Mexico as international destinations for UC access. I don't find UCs to be any less or more crowded than ACs. It all depends on the location and time of day.

Yeah that day pass at $50 is a bad deal. However, if you have many flights during a 30 day period, the 30-day membership for $99 could make sense: You can bring in 2 guests, and may even be flying some other carrier that day. You only need to be able to get to AC physically.

Just an endorsement of the point here. I toured the YYZ AC when I first made the switch. YYZ T3 is rather small (especially compared to YYZ T1), but that Admirals Club in YYZ is a broom closet compared to other ACs.

An interesting add, especially when you look at the Lounge Access page - First Class is hyphenated in one and not the other and one uses "on" when the other doesn't. Definitely added by someone other than the original author of the page, and hastily:

See the posts above this. 2-class is now allowed in, too, but only for transcons.

Yes, the club is small, but..
The staff are great. The agent put me on an earlier flight unprompted because of the delays.
    Also, some decent Canadian beers.

Love the air Canada maple leaf lounge much better, but love the avios redemption rates on lga-yyz.
