I just received a call from a friend who was flying JAX-ATL-LGA. He changed planes at Hartsfield. At JAX the AirTran folks told him he would have to check his oversized backpack. He left his laptop in the bag. You know the rest.

Please don't do this. It take a few moments to remove your valuables from the checked bag to spare you the aggravation of dealing with the lost luggage folks, insurance, local constabulary, etc.

I'm trying not to assume here, but did he lose his backpack or did someone steal from it?

Or did it "just" get smashed onto the tarmac? Lots of reasons not to check anything fragile or valuable.

Someone filched his laptop from the backpack. I apologize for leaving out this fact.

I'm always surprised when someone says this happened. Not because it was stolen, but because the person left it in their checked bag. Before most flights the FAs even remind you to remove anything valuable or fragile from your bags if you are forced to gate check them. Plus it just seems like common sense.

Also, keep your medications with you. Do not put meds in checked luggage.

Also be careful about leaving your laptop under the seat in front of you. During a redeye, my leg spasmed and I stomped on my closed laptop. I didn't think anything of it until I arrived in-country and couldn't get a wifi signal. The card was broken.

I guess the corrolary is to not buy cheap, crummy laptops.

That must've been one impressive leg spasm.

The "don't check your electronics" thing is a well-known rule 'round these here parts. I had my first and only lesson with this when my wife and I quickly stashed a camera in our checked suitcase. On the other end, suitcase showed up sans camera. Never again did we do that. Of course, never check any essential meds or other things you absolutely need or are of high value.

    Sucks to here that story.

I always try to carry on all valuables. Sometimes that causes me to bring a heavy bag on the plane but It is necessary evil.

The rule of thumb is never check in what you cannot live without for several days. While theft is one thing, just a lost bag traveling the world for several days before it reunite with you is something that can happen.
