Dear Captain Cox, are airline pilots and flight attendants required to have an annual physical exam to certify that they are capable of carrying out the duties of their jobs, especially in an emergency situation? If there are annual physicals, do they cover mental facilties as well? I ask this because of recent stories in the media about pilot and flight attendant "meltdowns" and also a recent story I saw about a United flight attendant who is in his mid 80s. How does United ensure that during an emergency he could perform his required duties as well as a much younger flight attendant? If pilots have a mandatory retirement age, shouldn't one exist for flight attendants, too? Finally, do you believe that deteriorating industry conditions (less pay, longer hours, fuller flights, unruly passengers) could have contributed to some of the situations that have occurred in the past year or so?
