If you are a CO or UA Elite, do you have to pay for the IFE/DirectTV when sitting in coach?

If not, does CO give some coupons (similar to UA drink chits that are included in your membership packet)?

Yes they have to pay and coupons don't do anything, they are just for drinks.. I do wish the cost of the TV depended on the flight, I'd only pay on a longer flight, not on anything less than 3 hours.

Ha. What do you think that this is American that gives little free tidbits to its elites onboard in Coach? :D

Well the airline is called United, right? [IMG]

And if United had an IFE, they would give their elites access or provide a few coupons.

Maybe TV chits for elites will be one of the "changes that we'll like".
(To offsets that numerous changes that we won't like.)

So just to get this straight, if you're on a CO 737, chances are your only IFE option is DirecTV or what you brung, while all other mainline aircraft all have AVOD. Would there be any free content with DTV, or is it all pay? Do the Continental Currency coupons work for DTV?

The 752 and 772s have AVOD. The 76s have an ancient Hi-8 loop-based system. The 735s have nothing. The 753s have overhead monitors until they get LiveTV; I believe that is scheduled for later this year. There is no free content on the LiveTV system unless the flight is delayed sufficiently that they activate it free for everyone; I do not know what the threshold is for that to make it happen but I know that it does happen from time to time.

And, no, the coupons do not work for the TV.

All the planes with AVOD or TV have plugs at some seats. From the exit row forward it is on all aircraft and on the 73E, 772 and 752 it is all rows.

Based on what? Revenue is the current focus du jour for airlines, and I don't know that they would be so quick to give that away. I hope I'm wrong, but I would not be surprised.

FWIW, you get a $2 discount if you swipe your Presidential Plus MasterCard. Maybe this will get expanded to UA's equivalent card.

I really wish that CO Currency would expand to include all onboard services. It's too bad that CO could not load up our elite cards with $25 or $30 worth of CO Currency for us to use as we wish.

I believe you also get that discount using OnePass Plus (base card) at least I think so.

And I definitely agree that the CO Currency would expand to include IFE.

This is why it would actually be nice to control the currency through your FF card and just swipe it like a debit card, a similar way to the way comps work at many casinos, which you swipe your players card and get the comp/discount.

You do get a $2 discount if you have and use the CO credit card. The times I have not been upgraded I've used my Presidential Plus card for the discount. Not too bad

I've always considered the drink chits on UA to be equivalent to the "EXP in coach gets a free drink" on AA. It would be nice if they used the magnetic strip on the elite card to load up some amount of onboard credit for 1K (or Plat+ or whatever the branding will be beginning in 2012) that could be used for drinks/BoB/TV. It would also be kind of nice if they made those re-loadable with a discount akin to the PPlus card so that if you were a top-tier elite who flew very elite-heavy routes you might still have a benefit beyond just exit rows.

    Both: no. :(

If you buy (emphasis on buy) an ELR seat (exit rows or other rows with more legroom) and swipe the same card on the IFE with which you bough the seat supposedly the DirecTV is free...

    Really?
I learn something new every day.

What if I did not actually "pay up" for the ELR seat?
(Got it because I'm CO Plat.)

Then you do not get the LiveTV for free.
