Hello, I'm still new to this forum and any help would be appreciated.

I purchased a flight on impulse today LAX -> CPH (Copenhagen, Denmark - $500!) via AirBerlin and there is a layover in DUS (Dusseldorf, Germany).

If I don't check in any bags, would it be possible to ditch the connecting flight and get off at Dusseldorf without incurring any penalties or fees?

So technically my flight would be LAX -> DUS then make my way to Copenhagen for the return flight CPH -> LAX

    Thanks!

If you miss a flight, the airline will cancel your entire ticket. So, if you were to skip the DUS-CPH flight, they would cancel your return flights from CPH-LAX. It's your call if you want to be stranded in Europe or not ;) :p

So you can definitely just get off in DUS, no penalty. If it was a one-way ticket that would be fine. But you will indeed sacrifice your return trip by doing this on the outbound.

These fares are also available as open-jaws. Check what it would cost to just book LAX-DUS + CPH-LAX rather than throwing away the segment.
