Travel + Leisure: Disney's best original rides

What's your favorite Disney ride? I always though the pre-updated Space Mountain was pretty dated, but really like the new version. It's a Small World...well, it is what it is...;) I think the Pirates of the Carribean movies certainly gave more appeal to the "ride" at Disney.

    :)

Riding Mr. Toad was the first time I ever saw the light at the end of the tunnel, and went to 'Hell' ;)

Space mountain, by far!!! I agree that now as an adult the new version is better, but love them both!

    Disneyland still has the ride.

Interesting fact: In Disney World, the Adventures of Winnie the Pooh replaced Mr. Toad's WIld Ride when it opened in 1999. Near the beginning of the ride in Owl's house, on the left wall you can find a picture of Mr. Toad handing the deed to Owl.

Just another fun thing that make Disney World a magical place to visit!

Damn. I didn't know that. It was one of my favs also. But my all time favorite was "carousel of progress". (been 20 years since I visited. WDW so it's probably gone also)

The Original Space Mountain, before they increased the lighting to where you could see the tracks. When it was DARK DARK DARK inside except for the Stars. (Was told that it was lightened up because too many folks were getting violently ill)

Now, in Epcot, Soaren. I think I got that right. If you haven't rode it, Do. About 20 years ago or so, what ever that ride inside the big silver ball was called, right where you walked into the park. Doubt if it's the same now than then, but I'm sure pretty darn cool.

Nope, Carousel of Progress is still there and going strong. However every time I visit it is not very full and never a wait.

Why can't I get that song out of my head!

Soarin' is a great ride (In addition to Epcot at Disney World, it can also be found at California Adventure park in California).

The "ride inside the big silver ball" is Spaceship Earth and went through a renovation a few years ago, but is essentially the same. A great ride through the past and future. My daughter loves when you get to make your own future with your head on the body!

Back in the day, I was one of those who got very sick after riding the old Space Mountain. I spent about twenty minutes sitting on the benches they had at the end of the ride, trying to regain my composure.

Some of my most fond memories are of Disneyland. In fact, as an adult, I took my grandmother to Disneyland for one last visit together. Even the pictures result in a warm feeling.

I enjoyed all the rides listed (that were still open by time I could remember them in the 70s. Not listed in the article, but on my list are Peter Pan and the Hall of Presidents. I really thought Lincoln was alive!

    Ahh... fond memories.

Went to Disneyland two weeks after it opened in 1955. Best ride then (no coupons until month 4-5) was Autopia, longest lines at the jungle cruise.

On the other hand, Disney World still has the people mover (so I'm told) but Disneyland does not. I really miss the old rocket ship ride, whatever it was called, since the new one at the entrance for Tomorrowland is kind of boring and fake looking.

I'm going to have to disagree with those who say the movie improved the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The only thing more annoying than having a ride based on a movie based on a ride is seeing Johnny Depp's face in plastic ever 30 seconds. So this is not really an "original ride" anymore than most movie remakes are "original." Besides, his makeup in that movie made him look bizzarre.

Jungle Cruise is one of the few good original rides I can think of. Haunted Mansion is also good.
