OK, this isn't really "dining" but close enough - it is "after dining."

Which would you miss more? The lack of a dishwasher, or the lack of a garbage disposal? I am thinking I miss the disposal more. I am without both right now (in my non-US place) and having the filter thing in the sink drain and having to empty it into the garbage is more annoying than washing the dishes. Of course, I'm not generating a lot of dirty dishes.

The dishwasher; I don't use the disposal very much and if you have garbage anyway, a few bits of food in addition don't seem to matter.

Easy enough question—dishwasher. We don't have a garbage disposal and I wouldn't want it if it meant giving up the dishwasher.

    Dishwasher.

It saves you plenty of time and makes life easier after using a lot of kitchen equipment. Working at a Big Ten university dining court makes me used to touching "nasty" trash in the sink so no need for a garbage disposal for me.

I have both at home. And now, having neither, and knowing the drains clog here very easily, I find that clearing out the filter into a garbage bag is very annoying.

Can't you just put the stuff directly into the garbage be scraping all plates well and putting grease directly into the garbage? If you'll be in the apartment for long, it might be worth buying some chemical stuff to unclog the drain.

I don't have either of them, but if I did then I would miss the dishwasher much more. It seems the disposal could be more trouble then it's worth. If my trash can starts to stink I just take the garbage bag outside (much easier than removing odor from the disposal).

I do, but lots of bits still end up in the sink - I bet the drain filters are fairly restrictive for a reason. Chemicals here might burn the plumbing, who knows.

True, but if you're just staying here short term.....

I wash everything by hand as it allows me to think about my recursive algorithms so I would miss the disposal more :p

Dishwasher. I don't have a garbage disposal so I can't miss it but not having a dishwasher from time to time has been terrible, it is not a must have in every future kitchen.

You could also think about recursive algorithms as the dishwasher is running. No problem.

Dishwasher, an amazing invention thank goodness. Though I actually find handwashing good china and crystal, as well as polishing silver, to occasionally be very relaxing.

I would miss the dishwasher more. I did without a disposal for quite a while.

Since I am (finally!) at the end of a 3 month long huge rehab project that includes a new kitchen, I can actually say I miss everything! Since early January, our at home 'dining' has consisted of take out or delivery and paper plates and plastic utensils. We've even resorted to take out coffee! So as you may imagine, a dishwasher, a disposal, heck even a sink with running water will be a joy!

Just finished a kitchen remodel. Had gone without a dishwasher for years, did without a disposal for almost a year before remodel, and did without running water for a month. Now that I have it all back, I can say that I would miss the dishwasher the most (after running water of course). Disposal I can work around without issue.

Our dishwasher is handy, we use it as an extra storage cabinet for water bottles and large bowls. In our previous house, we removed the dishwasher when we remodeled, and replaced it with a big cabinet to hold pots and pans. We never actually turned the unit on in either houses.

I think I had a garbage disposal when I lived in an apartment 20 years ago, but I'm not certain; if I did, I doubt I ever turned on the switch on purpose.

So, I don't miss either of them.

Dishwasher - even though I actually wash the dishes before I put them in. LOL - totally lazy as it saves drying the dishes and I know they are super clean

This sounds potentially serious. I hope the water returns soon.

Dishwasher for me also, especially since we now have the "clean green" bins. All our food scraps (and more) go in there for pick up each week. I did put in a disposal after over 20 years in our house without one but find I rarely use it, but the dishwasher drawers get used often. I love having the two drawers, perfect for when it is just my DH and the kitty bowls, an then when we have company being able to use both drawers is perfect!

Having lived through not having either at various points in my life, it's the dishwasher for sure! My hands are so much softer now.
