I just received my statement with an $85 renewal fee from Chase on my United credit card. When I called Chase, they gave me some choices to keep the card.

The first choice was a statement credit of $100 if I kept the card.
The second choice was a 15,000 retention miles bonus if I spend $3000 in 30 days. Since I have some heavy spending coming up, I took this deal. No brainer. A total of 15,000 + 3000 = 18,000 free UA miles.

Don't forget, call the credit card company. Don't leave any miles on the table.

Do you ask the regular Chase CS for the retention bonus, or do they use the same procedure as Citibank - i.e. first transfer to the account closing department?

They transfer you over. For 15,000 miles, I'll gladly be put on hold for a couple of minutes.

How much did you use the card before you called? My CO OnePass MC is coming up for renewal. I pretty much only use it for car rentals (once a month or so), due to the primary insurance coverage it provides. Wonder if Chase would see an incentive to offer me a retention bonus.

I haven't used the card in close to a year. This is a card that I originally got for the signup bonus. ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if they were to offer a retention bonus subject to a spend requirement.

Right, but I'd probably be okay with this option:

"The first choice was a statement credit of $100 if I kept the card. "

Although, maybe I should just cancel it and get the Explorer card and hopefully get a new sign-up bonus.
