In anticipation of a potential US / AA Merger it makes sense to have as many credit cards as possible within each program make sure that you have the best card available after consolidation changes the offers (should a merger happen) and to maximize earned points. For that purpose I’d like to start the discussion of how we can maximize our card holdings between the two programs. If the merger doesn’t happen we will be left with miles in the two programs!

(Please help find methods/urls for better offers.)

I’ll list current offers in this post (and hopefully update those offers as others provide more information).

    Current Offers
    American - CitiBank
Since saacman5033 has a very good updated list of AA cards on FT I’m going to quote his links and point you to that post for now. Links and source:

    Q&A:
    American - Citibank
    1. Can I apply for more than one card at a time?
    - Yes use the two browser trick: http://millionmilesecrets.com/2011/10/11/citi-aadvantage-50000/
    2. How often can I apply for a Citibank card.
    - Generally you can apply for an AA card every 90 days (is that right?), and you need to wait 18 months before applying for the same card.

    US Airways - Barclays
    1. Is it possible to apply for both the Premier World US Airways card ($89 annual fee) and the World US Airways card ($49 annual fee)?
    2. Is it possible to downgrade from the Premier World US Airways card ($89 annual fee) to the World US Airways card ($49 annual fee) via a new application? If so what is the URL for each?
    3. Can you be approved for more than one Premier World US Airways card to separate you spending?

(Please help answer this and fill it out. I’ll update it with your Q&A’s.)

I got my 50K AA Visa in October 2011, and my 40K AA MC just last April. When will I be eligible to apply for the 50K AA AMEX card? And, how many cards can I apply for at this point?

I've never had a Barclays card and would be definitely interested if I could apply for both on an app-o-rama.

Applied twice to this card ... and twice I was denied. FICO score of around 750 with very low credit utilization ratio. Did a reconsideration letter after the second denial but they did not even acknowledge it!

Wow I've heard Barclays was tough. I'm sitting right around the same credit score as you. On the next app o Rama I think I just try one of these cards.

I just applied for the US Air Barclays card and was approved instantly... around same credit score and moderate credit utilization... maybe too many open accounts?

Which is exactly why I just applied for and received the 40K offer from Barclays for the US Air card... I already have the CitiBank AA card....

Got to cover all the bases!

My reason for applying for multiple cards is that if AA & US merge there will be change in the banking options of the new company. I want to insure that I have a good choice of cards to keep after a merger.

I have an AA Visa and two other Citicards, one US Airways card. I applied for the following and was only instantaneously approved for the first one. I tried chat for approval on a AA second and they said it was approved with a low limit, then later it was not and was sent to another department.

You'll note that I purposely applied for some lower bonuses with lower spend.

    3. AA Citibank Personal 2. American Express, Up to $100 credit, two admirals club passes, 50k miles (40k for $2k within 4 months of opening + 10k after $5k within 12 months of opening), 2 miles/$ on AA: Direct Links:

I am curious to hear the thoughts and speculation on what would happen to the benefits of the US Air card given a merger. It seems that there is thought a merger would take place next year in 2013 and then a year after the FF programs would be combined with AA being the kept program. There would be a devaluation of US miles if that holds true and those dream US Air redemptions would go bye bye. I guess that 10,000 annual bonus would be AA instead if kept and merger happens quickly.

I wonder if Citibank is still a large AA creditor? A few years back they made large investments, paid back in points. If the still are a large creditor it could result in Citibank being the long term financial product vendor for the new company.

Either way this is a huge opportunity to merge points into one program.

Just a reminder HackMyTrip is suggesting that we are in the final days of the US Airways credit cards and that Citibank may have new post merger AA cards soon:
    http://hackmytrip.com/2013/06/final-days-for-the-us-airways-and-american-credit-cards/

US cards can be found at:
    http://www.usairways.com/en-US/dividendmiles/creditcards/default.html

Now is the time to load up on the US cards, which are first purchase bonuses (but the quoted bonuses include a 10K bonus for a blance transfer), plus the AA Mastercard:

I'd just like to remind everyone that with the AA and US merger coming close now is the time to make sure that you apply and earn the sign up bonus for both the AA and US cards. Likely the US cards will go away. If we are lucky the AA cards will be released under an new card type that we can apply for again later.

Yes, I'd expect that most of my cards will be closed by that point...
