Discount for having both gold and platinum cards?

Discussion in 'American Express | Membership Rewards' started by swngair, Jan 5, 2012.  |  Print Topic

  1. I know some people have both the Preferred Rewards Gold Card and Platinum. I assume this is because you get better rewards with Gold (3x MR on travel purchases). If I sign up for a Platinum card, do I still have to pay full price to keep my Gold card?

Never hurts to ask. However, I doubt it will accomplish a fee waver.

I would be interested to see if anyone had luck with getting fees waived with Amex! :)

Do report if you will have any luck. In my case having 2 SPG and Amex Platinum plus 4 other free Amex cards, they did not even want to wave 1 of my SPG card fees.

If you really want to keep the card, dont ask them to waive the fees... Just ask them for some extra points to lessen the pain :)

I did get points indeed, but not even close to cover the cost of the card :(

My esposa and I have a number of AMEX cards with fees. I called AMEX when the new fee hit the statement. They offered to give me a credit for 1/2 the fee on my Gold Card or 3500 MR points. I opted for the fee credit.

Have had my Platinum card for many, many years. Just applied for a received a Gold Preferred Rewards card and also have two Starwood cards (personal and business). Called to cancel my Platinum because the annual card fee was due and got absolutely no retention offer. The agent pushed me along to someone who merely noted that I had a over a million rewards points and said she would make sure they carried over to my new card. And that was it, no suggestion of a retention offer. I was quite surprised. So now I have gone from Centurion to Platinum to Gold without a retention offer. Seems strange to me.

Amex Canada offers $100 fee reduction if you have a Plat card.
