I'm in F on an upcoming DCA-ORD. The flight purports to provide dinner, but I am a bit skeptical, as I don't associate CR-7's with significant catering capabilities.

    What should I reasonably expect?

On UA it's a box with sandwich, small salad, snack items. On snack flights its Oloves, maybe salami, hummus. I haven't flown an AE CR7, tho.

I think the planes have no ovens

Seacarl is correct, there are no ovens. AA will provide a cold plate dinner. For example, my last F CRJ experience was ORD-SLC. I had asparagus wrapped beef with couscous pearls and potato salad, a side salad, and a lemon cake.

    I actually really enjoyed it.

Different situation....as a reference point, AC serves hot meals on their RJs in certain markets. They have ife, too!

There's a sandwich?? I've never had anything else than a sodium shock snack box, including MIA-ORD.

DCA-ORD you will get NOTHING on UA, even on mainline (except the snack basket they walk around with or a bag of fancy pretzels on RJs). Haven't flown AA on the route, but AA RJ DEN-ORD had a full, cold dinner. Pretty tasty and I was very pleasantly surprised (I'm a fairly new AA member)

I was on a CR7 in F from JFK to ORD and had a very substantial cold meal plate with grilled shrimp and some beef -- it was all of good quality and quite tasty!

Yup, a full cold meal is served. American Eagle blows all other regional carriers away. This is what I had, a lovely BBQ platter out of IAH to LAX:

This was a meal I had last year on a CR7 (basically the picture above, though I don't remember it looking that pretty :p):

I've had some surprisingly good meals DEN-LAX on AA. As others have said, you can't beat the meals on the CR-7s AFA regional carriers are concerned.
