Just got back from the Chicago Seminar 2011 and finally decided to sign up for this site after I found out that Randy founded this site too. I've been a FT member for a few years now and know some people post on both forums, so I am just wondering the differences I should know about these two sites. The stuff I have noticed is MP has nicer graphics, thus easier to read. Any other ones that I should know about?

This site tends to be a little easier on new posters. No megathreads containing years worth of posts letting you know if someone cleared an upgrade in 2007, and a pretty decent messaging system that I find myself using quite a bit with fellow AA flyers in the Bay Area. I do enjoy the software here.

    Did you try search?

Oh, wait, that's the answer on the oher site :D

As Tom said, this site tends to be a bit more newbie-friendly, but overall the atmosphere strikes me as less combative even among old timers.

There are also no moderators here that aggressively edit posts or slam threads shut. There are MilePoint guides, but as far as I know they serve a different purpose.

Check it out for a bit, I think you'll like it. And Welcome!

The other bulletin board seems to be taken up with more and more trolls; though it may still contain more information than here, the useful stuff is harder to find there.

I agree. There seems to be more information on flyertalk, but not as easy to find or comprehend at times.
I also like how Milepoint gives me a little red alert at the top of the page when someone has quoted or liked a posting of mine.

I've also noticed a lot less preaching and moralizing over here than at FT. The self-righteousness of some over there makes you wonder sometimes why they're involved at all in any sort of loyalty programs or the forum for that matter

    Welcome to Milepoint!
(and yes, getting lots of welcomes is one of the big differences here)

    Welcome to Milepoint, dreamfool!

The interface is easier and the addition of photos is also a generation in improvement. While information may be slower to post and there are fewer participants, overall, Milepoint is a friendly place with a lot of seasoned travellers willing to answer questions as best they can. You will also notice that the community-building vibe is very strong here. With a smaller group (but growing), people are a bit more collegial and supportive. One example would be how the Kiva threads have grown -- there is a lot of encouragement and positive energy.

enjoy the stay and please continue to post!

    Welcome to Milepoint, dreamfool!

I find this interface much cleaner and better. MP really takes advantage of new social web tech. I love the fact that I have an alert section for replies, quotes, etc. and I find the people here friendlier and more helpful in general. They also play off of our addiction to status levels by awarding silver, gold, and platinum depending on like, posts, etc. (the actual algorithm isn't publicly available as far as I know).

Hopefully you'll stick around and join in!

    Welcome to MP dreamfool!

People are far friendlier here than in FT. Also the interface is easier on the eyes. I also like the "alerts" as it tell you if someone has quoted and/or liked your post. I also really like the ability to "like" a post here as it gives me a chance to show my appreciation to useful posts. Overall, it is just a way better place to be where I can learn something new every day.

I'll add my welcome, as well.

One thing that I note is that you actually have a chance to post questions without judgement (i.e. "Do A Search") and answers without competition. Reminds me a lot of the early FT years (I joined FT in 1999.)

As FT progressed, it became almost impossible to answer a question because someone was always there to answer first; I just stopped trying! Here, I have an opportunity of answering questions without that "competition". I'm not knocking FT at all; I just find myself more at home here.

I like FT and still visit it regularly, but it always feels like picking up an old flip phone after a few years of using smart phones.

The difference between us and those trolls, information hogs, points hogs, spammers, grumpy, greedy, dismissive, un-user-friendly, mean-to-newbies, arrogant, rude DYKWIA types over at FT is that we don't engage in name-calling.

Here, you know exactly who likes you. It's those who click 'Like' under your posts. On FT, all bets are off.

reasonable levels of moderator intervention here versus ad hoc no justification editorial work by FT moderators if you happen to post something that is right but makes some sort of person who thinks they know something on FT sound wrong.

The most amusing part is that some people here can't even bring themselves to say "FT." It's just "that other site."

    Welcome to Milepoint.:)
The way it has worked out for me is this. In the sense of saving the best for last, Milepoint is the last thing I read everyday. But, that also means that I always read Flyertalk first.;)
