I didn't bother to read the German, but was it a regularly scheduled flight (unlikely) or a charter? You seem to be asking whether there's a LH aircraft that has been fitted out as a pope-mobile or (more likely) one that can be converted to the pope configuration quickly.

Perhaps an analogy would be charters for sports teams. AFAIK, when there's a season contract, USA legacy carriers keep special planes on hand for these charters. They're not exactly custom, but they are configured very differently and they don't seem to go in and out of the special configuration on a daily business depending on whether the aircraft will be used for the team charter that day. I think some legacies keep a small fleet for this purpose, so that a team wouldn't have exclusive on-call use of an aircraft 24/7 unless they were to pay a whole lot more.

My guess is that the pope's plane comes from a small fleet of VIP aircraft in LH livery for special charters.

It was a charter, not a regularly scheduled flight.

I have my doubts that LH has enough charter demand to maintain such a sub fleet. More likely a temporary reconfig to rip out a bunch of seats, put in nicer C/F seats and a bulkhead to separate the pope from the flying riff-raff (journalists).

I don't know about LH, but when Pope JP2 visited the US in the mid-90s, he flew on an AA 767 that had been fitted with a bed in first class (this was well before they had sleeper seats). It was a one-off charter configuration which AA maintenance set up specifically for the occasion.

So the answer to the OP's question is no, the pope either flew VIP class or special Pope class.

He's also shown up on Alitalia Metal as well. But had to bring his own duct tape to repair the arm rests....

IIRC, the Pope always flies Alitalia when leaving Rome, and flies an airline from the destination country when coming back.

The article also mentioned that it's the third time the pope has flown on this particular aircraft (do they have a flightmemory account for him?). Maybe it has an interior that's more easily reconfigurable. Would they put a special (larger.... cleaner?) lav in as well?

I want to fly Pope class. Sounds awesome. You get your own little Plexiglas-surrounded seat and everything! Maybe the FAs kneel and kiss your ring.

AZ uses masking tape, not duct tape. The metallic qualities of the duct tape would interfere with their navigation systems.

Looks like he's created a jam of people behind him as he tries to find his holy seat. ;)

He got the upgrade on this one. Look at that pitch. There's "lie-flat," then there's "lie on the floor in front of your seat and spread out fully."

The pictures of the Pope sitting look like old FC seats with the row of seats that would otherwise be in front removed. The colors don't look right for LH at all (and not KLM either). The green could be AZ but the embroidered linen head rest cover in post #19 could be an Asian carrier. I don't recognize the red-orange carpet at all.

The green in 18 is AZ. He's sitting in front, and coming back to Y to speak with the media.

The photo in 20 is of the same plane as 19. They clearly removed several rows of seats - and installed special carpeting. There would be tracks for the seats visible otherwise.

I can't figure out what sort of plane it is in 20/19. The window shades look like a Boeing plane, but the angle of the windows makes me think Airbus a bit (as they put their windows higher to allow more cargo).

Can anyone zoom in on the magazine racks in 20? I wonder if they left SkyMall in there for him?
