Just tried to buy two future United Club Lounge Passes (day/one time) at ATL. The agent said I had to buy it at the club I planned on using it at.

I then asked how I'm supposed to gift these to someone if that's my intent. She did not know. She made a call to someone asking about this and apparently they did not know either.

Then I was told that if I wanted to buy one, I needed to declare which city/club I wanted it to be used at, as they are now club-specific. huh?

Are any of these bits of info correct? I called UA between our exchanges at the ATL counter and the phone agent said I should be allowed to purchase as a gift for a future visit at any club

The website no longer allows one to purchase a one-time pass online. I'm not all that surprised that they don't have a way to sell them the way you want based on that.

One would think so. Why would they turn down the revenue?
If one can only buy a pass at the club they intend to use, then it’s truly an idiotic move.
A business should find ways to consume the customer’s money and be easy to do business with.

that doesn't answer any of my questions. I'm aware of not being able to purchase online, which is why I tried at an actual club...

I think what WA was saying is that UA might not have a capability to sell any advance club-passes and keep track of them. They require you now to go to a club and buy on the spot because then they are not tracking future club passes.

If you're giving as a gift, you could Paypal $100 over to the gift recipient.

If someone gifted me $100 from Paypal I could certainly find better use for it than at a UC

eBay is the "official" purveyor of "giftable" United Club one-time passes.

well, I haven't sent a complaint to UA in several years. I guess they're due for one. The phone rep i spoke to this morning actually recommended it if they wouldn't sell me one.

But they do give away two UA Club passes per year to holders of their Chase credit card, and those passes are not location-specific.

If they can give them away, you'd sure think they could sell them (Duh!).

I just got a couple of those UA club passes on the anniversary of my Chase Explorer card and there is no requirement that I use them in specific clubs or locations. The whole thing is idiotic. The CSRs were making the rules as they went along because they do not know what the rules are. It is more a mismanagement issue (read: a **** up) than anything else. Someone at UA just needs to get on the ball and fix it so that things would work the way they should...

Fair point. But that makes the assumption that UA's IT Department is competent, an assumption that I would challenge.
