    I recall some past controversy about the DEN toll road and the charges applied to rental cars. Can someone remind me what was going on there? Collecting some info for a friend.

    Things have likely changed since that issue. I believe the issue was that people were getting charged for using the ExpressPass even when they stopped and paid cash at the toll booths. Now there are no more toll booths so everything is PlatePass. Your plate will be photographed and a bill will be mailed to the address on record. The rental companies will kindly charge you an additional fee for charging your credit card for the toll. On the plus side the company that runs the toll road (E-470) only catches your plate about 30% of the time. At least that has been the experience of myself and my family.

    An alternative would be to just avoid the toll roads all together.

    Is it possible to avoid the toll roads going into and out of DEN?

    Depends on where you are going and your masochism (rush hour STINKS!).

    To Downtown Denver or the mountains: Pena Blvd to I-70
    To Boulder: Pena Blvd to I-70 to I-270 to US-36
    To Ft Collins/Loveland: Pena Blvd -> I-70 -> I-270 -> I-25
    To Colorado Springs or Denver Tech Center: Pena Blvd -> I-70 -> I-25

    Basically all E-470 does is ring the Eastern part of the city and offers a quicker way to get to Boulder or Colorado Springs.

    A few years ago I used to take the toll road as it saved 20 minutes, but now will only take it if it is near rush hour as the high fare isn't worth the 10 minute or so savings.
