Does this mean that with all their cost cutting over the past years they still had that much excess and redundancy, or does it mean they are cutting essential people, leading to short term gains and big long term problems?

The simple fact is that most companies out there are still looking for ways to save money and operate more efficiently. This has become the corporate mantra over the past several years since the downturn and will continue to be into the future until there is a significant rebound and acceleration in the economy.

The fact that they are making the cuts from the back office hopefully means that they have figured how to do things more efficiently there and are making the cuts as a result... they appear to recognize that the customer facing component is already lean.

This move to layoff 200 was after they were able to buyout or intice 2,000 to take early retirement. Although they are not front line employees as they call them, I still venture to guess they are fairly essential or why would they be in place in ATL to begin with.

They need to lay off these 200 so the management has the money for their million dollar bonuses this year.

DL could lay off 1,000 people and it wouldn't impact customers. That's what matters.

A friend of mine is the CEO of an airport terminal where DL operates...he said he continues to be baffled by how DL wastes money/has no idea where they spend it, etc.

Sacking management because of allowing such a culture to promulgate is something that the board should consider. Leaving unnecessary staff isn't acceptable (regardless of the board's decision).

Just how much fuel can 200 people consume?

When they gave out the pink slips, did it say "you've been laid off" or did it say "you've been enhanced"?

sigh...hope that these folks can find jobs...my friends in ATL do not have many nice things to say about the job market there...part of the reason I'm in the UK....:\

As long as Jeff is one of the 200, I have no problem with it.

Of course, with the current heat wave, I really don't mind only visiting ATL. :)

Thought 1: hopefully whoever dreamed up the 72 hour rule will be one of them. Likewise those that approved it.
Thought 2: Now if we can only get the TSA to do the same.
