Delta will now credit most flights ticketed on SkyTeam tickets with Medallion Qualifying Dollars. The DL FT rep posted the information here. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta-air-lines-skymiles/1661805-march-2015-skymiles-update.html

DL will also allow so called exception fares(3rd party or consolidated fares) to earn MQMs & PQDs at the rates specified at Delta.com So the main question that arises for United Mileage Plus members is will UA offer PQDs for Star carrier tickets? Given United's proclivity to match everything Delta, there should be a rapid response to make certain Delta does not have the sole advantage in their program.

Flew UA to China recently and was given a 1K Challenge. I'll fly back, redeem the points, but I'll stick with DL, thank you very much.

That would have been an nice benefit if UA had that. ;)

Hardly. United: defiance within an alliance.

I agree that there would need to be negotiations between the members of *A. This may take time.

Not really at all. Lower earning on cheaper partner fares is very common within the alliance. Ditto for requirement of earning status on "home" metal.

UA could make this change tomorrow if it wanted to without any consultation with any partners. Unlike the issuing of miles this doesn't require negotiating contracts.

I agree that the 800 pound gorilla could do this instantly, but it would not be good for the alliance.

It would be interesting to see if UA copies yet another page out of DL's playbook.

    Explain.

How would UA know how many PQDs a non-UA ticket on a non-UA metal on a non-JV airline to credit?

How would it not be good for *A? PQDs without partner credit were bad for alliance. Earning PQDs on *A would encourage more M+ elites to fly *A partners. That would be good for *A.

What UA should do is get rid of PQDs, go back to PQMs, and award more PQMs for high value fares, whether on UA or *A. Simplify the program.

I suggested that some time ago. Clearly that decision authority was well above my pay grade.

Assuming it follows the DL approach, it would not know the dollar spend but that's OK because the credit it based on a combination of distance traveled and fare class. And UA already has that data from partners.
