Oh, Delta Airlines. You are the most beloved airlines in the world…or wait, no. Scratch that. You’re one of the least-respected brands in the world, because of, as Yahoo! Finance reported back in August, the sizable gap between how well you’re known and how you’re perceived. This item in the news is not going to help you win the hearts of Americans.

Last week The Washington Post reported on passenger Jeff White. He had booked a flight from Pensacola, Florida to Albany, New York via Atlanta. All seemed normal until he noticed the glaring confirmation code: H8GAYS. Whoops.

The University of West Florida student told The Post, “At first I didn’t think I read it right. I was worried that another customer might think I somehow picked that code. If I were a gay male, I might have thought that a Delta worker purposely gave me that code, and that would have made me extremely uncomfortable.”

In other news, the University of West Florida apologizes for admitting this "bright" individual to its esteemed institution of higher education.

This is NON NEWS and BS. I'm gay and I would like to think that any reasonable person know confirmation numbers are computer generated.

This would be a different situation if the confirmation numbers were manually generated by a human.

This "report" is by someone looking for 15 minutes of fame under the disguise of "doing the right thing".

I've always thought that confirmation codes which intersperse letters and numbers are better. Less chance of 666 or other numbers putting people off; likewise letter combinations. Some people are really upset by these things. Others move on.

And some are just amused. Life's too short to be upset by this nonsense.

While I thought the article was pretty stupid to begin with, looking at this imagined example it strikes me that the airlines almost certainly already filter their record locators for a variety of four letter words (I doubt their systems would ever produce a code with that particular four-letter word embedded in it). In a texting world, perhaps it's time to add "H8" to the list of terms that force rejection of a record locator.

What if a foreign non-English-speaking partner airline generates it? Surely there are similar short cuts for other languages... soon 50% of the possible record locators will be censored.

I doubt it would be anything near 50%. If they're not going to endeavor to catch them all, I suppose they shouldn't try to catch any.

Right, I was pulling the 50% out of my...

I think they shouldn't bother to catch any of them It's a bit like the license plate censoring. Would you be able to get away with H8GAYS as your license plate? I think you should, and I would think it's not a very wise choice to make.

(I remember back in 2003 or 2004 when I first got a Prius I saw another one on the freeway. It was a somewhat rare sight back then, and I was highly amused to see the license plate -- F OPEC. Not sure how they got that by the plate censors, but I loved it)

Tommy777, make sure you get some TP for HaveMilesWillTravel while you're at Costco. :D

Just for that license plate, he gets a pass for driving a Prius. :D

    I like this game.

How many totally awful combos of six letters and numbers can we dream up?

Hey, I just got a confirmation code of H8STR8, which news media outlet should I choose for my story of anguish and outrage.

Bad enough that the previous confirmation code was UGAMER. :)
