Dante Alighieri is going on vacation, into restoration. The Dante statue located in Piazza Santa Croce, which has been blackened and dirtied by pollution and the weather will be cleaned to its original white. This endeavor will cost about €34,000 and should be behind close doors for two months. This project is called The Risorgimento in Florence-The places of memory.” It is funded by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers as part of the celebration for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
The statue stands normally on the steps of Santa Croce church on the left hand side. The monument was originally placed in the middle of the piazza in 1865 to celebrate 6th century of his birthday. After the 1966 flood, was moved to the left side of the stairs and it also made room for the Calcio Storico, the historic soccer match that is played every Summer in Piazza Santa Croce.
Dante was created by Enrico Pazzi. It is made of white marble from Carrara and was restored in the late ’60s. The restoration, as many restorations deal with, is to strengthen the material from the elements of the world. Keeping it clean from pollutants and providing it with a strong base to withhold the weather as well.
