I am certainly no economist or financial expert by any means and I don't know much about their situation but they seem to be having a slow recovery from the recession. In terms of income per capita, they are still ahead of some EU members. (I looked it up to help you out since you were curious!) :)

Just a quick word about your complaint of lack of passport stamps; joining the EU does not mean joining the Schengen agreement, which is the agreement that allows for passport-less travels.

Some of the countries that joined the EU recently, like Romania and Bulgaria, have not been accepted in the Schengen agreement and I don't foresee Croatia joining the Schengen agreement in 2013 either, so you can still get your stamps for some time :)

The UK, for example, is not part of the Schengen agreement.

Will get better with acceptance into EU and ability to siphon off some of the lower end manufacturing jobs from Western Europe and more expensive Eastern Europe countries.

Yes, and then on the other hand we have countries like Iceland, Norway and Switzerland that are not members of EU, but are members of the Schengen agreement.
