It was the trip of a lifetime for Auburn's Joan Ashworth and her husband, Christopher Hill – a relaxing week on the South American coast in Uruguay.
It was perfect until they went to retrieve their bags from San Francisco International Airport,

When the baggage carousel stopped spinning in the early morning hours of July 11, Ashworth’s bag wasn’t there. When Ashworth and Hill went to the United Airlines counter, airline representatives made big promises.

“Your bag will be there tomorrow morning, no problem. They said it arrived in San Francisco,” Ashworth told FOX40.

The bag made quite an international journey, last seen by Ashworth at customs in Houston, only to be misplaced in the States.
“Uruguay to Panama City, Panama City to Houston and then Houston to San Francisco,” Ashworth said.

The international bag affair run around doesn’t end there. Enter the off-the-continent call center, “They send the call to India. Who in India is going to help me find my bag?”
The irony is not lost on Ashworth.

Couldn't agree more. These stories pop up all the time and people never learn.

I always carry the family jewels onto the plane and keep them under close observation.

Nothing but clothes and anything I don't mind losing goes in a bag and leaves my sight. That was just plan silly on their part.

They may try and claim on homeowners insurance, but I doubt the insurance company would pay off as they would probably agree with most of us, how stupid, even though the insuance company might be more diplomatic in saying this to the claimant. More diplomatic, like "claim denied"!

Which explains the sudden overstock of jewelry in San Francisco pawn shops.

More likely, it never got to San Francisco and is somewhere in between.

This in no way excuses the thieves/idiots/etc that are responsible for this..BUT...you are partially to blame for your own stupidity.

If I wander into a ghetto at midnight and leave the keys in my BMW and shout "my car is unlocked", that does not mean people should still steal it, but that is also on me for being a moron because I know what is going to happen. Same thing applies when you check a suitcase full of supposedly priceless jewelry.

To be honest, they have no proof they actually packed what they said they packed.

Q3: why did they TAKE "priceless jewels" on a trip?
Q4: why did they subject themselves to ridicule by going to the media with that story?

All bags that arrive via international destinations are once again scanned by the TSA. Bags are often delayed by the TSA process and miss the flight. I know because I have taken many a delayed bag claim for this reason. I haven't read the article, don't wish to read the article and if these folks really did check-in valuables, I am sorry for their loss but how stupid can they be?

Reminds me of the time I saw some kid (younger than I) going to Vegas with an open envelope full of 100s drop it in the security bin. The screener grabbed it and told him not to let it out if his sight. Idiots.

Who doesn't have "mysterious disappearance" coverage on valuable jewels? It typically costs about 1% p/a of the value of the items and can be had as part of renters or homeowners insurance.

While such cover won't replace the memories of the items...it will replace the items themselves!

We left some rather deluxe jewels in the in-room safe at the MO in NYC. Oops. They called us a few hours after we left to inform us.

We went back and claimed them...they had them in the front office safe at that point.

These items were nice, but not of significant emotional value. My wife was sort of hoping they were gone so she could use the insurance proceeds to buy new, different items! :)
