Grabbing a bite to eat can take on a whole new meaning when you are making your way around the world.

    1. Balut, Philippines

It isn’t always enough to spend your time rushing to the next cookie-cutter tourist stop. If you really want to experience what another country has to offer, then try travelling like a local and most importantly, eating like a local. Each culture has its own take on mealtime, and immersing yourself fully in that ritual is a must-do for any traveller worth their salt. And we’re not talking about munching on your own weight in pasta in Italy, or chowing down on a bucketload of croissants in Paris. You need to stretch the imagination a little bit here, folks. Some of the following options might not exactly conjure images of gastronomical delight but the saying “don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it” rings true in each case.

So, before you go searching for French fries, step out of your comfort zone and try one of these weird foods from around the world. ................

What is considered a delicacy in one area and by one group may be considered an abomination by others.

I had #4- Cuy while in Peru. Tough meal to eat with all of those tiny bones. My wife (barely) ate looking at the ground the whole time. I can't say that I really liked it but I had to try it!

I'd like to see China's list of the world's top five weirdest foods. Guesses would include "bread" and "cheese."
Though the most unusual food in my mind now might be Filipino pasta, that is, with brown sugar or worse, condensed milk in the tomato sauce.

I think that watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom as a kid had a weird effect on me.
I love to try weird things. Snakes, bugs, chilled monkey brains.
Some of it tastes surprisingly good!

Korea has some of it's own which would/should make it on the list. Fermented skate fish smells worse than anything on the list (the acidic smell actually burns your nostrils), ground pig head loaf which comes in the disguise of ham but surely is not, and then of course dog. Although the last one you wouldn't even know it was dog since it resembles lamb once cooked and served in a stew.

When I travel I tend to try weird food that would end up on Zimmerman's show for sure.

I've ate tons of Durians thanks to my wayward boss when I lived in Malaysia, I can never quite get the hang of how it tastes like old smelly socks not that I'd know firsthand what old smelly socks tasted like but I could imagine.

Only way I can eat it is in candy form. Then again, at that point, it barely tastes like durian :D

Frozen durians are sold in NYC, and I'd reckon they might smell a bit better than what usually emanates from Elizabeth St...
And now to go OT, what's the point of showing who wrote the last message in a thread when one can't actually go to the last message? Do ALL members have groupies already?...

Unfortunately, it does not smell better than the ones on Elizabeth, grand or Mott. It is actually more fragrant as my wife and best friend (from SIN and PEN) say all the time respectively. I think it just downright stinks. I will say that I have had it in a puff pastry and bake goods and it isn't as strong. But it is all relative, like cheese, game meats, etc.

I don't understand the groupies comment... But if you click on the time stamp under the name of the person who posted the last message (I assume you're thinking of the What's New page), it should take you straight to that last post.

The groupies comment referred to my inability (and continued inability) to go straight to the last post; in other words, I'm not as interested in who posted last as I am in if something was recently posted.

Uh, I wasn't comparing durians to durians. I was comparing frozen ones to other smells coming from Elizabeth St...

Thanks, HaveMilesWillTravel. It's working now; I first was testing it out on my mobile device and coming up with a ice cold glass of futility.
