Hi all. Strongly looking to EK as a secondary program to use for a lot of the international travel from NYC.

I am looking at things and tier miles are causing me planning fits. I usually fly Y for cost factors. Once in a while if the price is right, J or F (think HKG-BKK).

I am trying to figure out an approximate budget to get Gold each year.

These won't be mileage runs but mileage earning will be a concern.

JFK-DXB return on a Skywards flex fare (most fares are flex) will give you:

    Blue:
12,000 Skywards Miles + 12,000 Tier miles in Economy
21,000 Skywards Miles + 21,000 Tier miles in Business
30,000 Skywards Miles + 30,000 Tier miles in First

    Silver:
15,000 Skywards Miles + 12,000 Tier miles in Economy
24,000 Skywards Miles + 21,000 Tier miles in Business
33,000 Skywards Miles + 30,000 Tier miles in First

    Gold:
18,000 Skywards Miles + 12,000 Tier miles in Economy
27,000 Skywards Miles + 21,000 Tier miles in Business
36,000 Skywards Miles + 30,000 Tier miles in First

For Silver, you need 25,000 tier miles
For Gold, you need 50,000 tier miles

There are also Mile Accelerator fares once in a while, so if you are lucky with those, two return trips in Economy will earn you silver. Four return trips in Economy to DXB will earn you gold. At a cost of approx $1,500 return, it would cost you roughly $6k to reach gold. If your destination is not DXB, i.e. you are just connecting to your next EK flight to your final destination you'll reach gold rather quickly, I guess.

A return HKG-BKK in F gives you 5,000 Tier miles.

Accelerators only give extra skywards miles, not tier miles.

    Thanks, overlooked that info.
So, without any potential bonuses, 3 return trips JFK-DXB as Skywards Blue will earn you silver. You'll then have 36,000 tier miles. You will need another 2 return trips JFK-DXB as silver, which will give you 60,000 tier miles and Skywards Gold.

In general, I am dont think most fares are Flex fare...I usually always find Saver fares, which only earn half the mileage (tier miles and skywards miles).
For Flex fares (in Y), one usually has to call the EK ticketing office. This is my experience.
EK.com usually spits out saver fares in Y.

Thank you for confirming that. It is also what I am finding, although I have not called a ticketing office for the higher one yet. Still in the research phase for this on my part.

Depending on the route, the difference between Flex and Saver can be anywhere from 8% to much much more.
(it also depends on what is the most expensive saver fare and the cheapest flex fare on that route).

The ability to select Flex fares is now available via ek.com. You must be a Skywards member and logged in before you can search and specify for Flex fare options.
