Mostly because it is bad data.

And trends based off bad data are not to be trusted.

Well, that and the fact that the methodology isn't disclosed and the results aren't reproducible in any specific fashion.

I talked with the guy at an event a few weeks ago; I understand the methodology. I don't believe it accurately reflects the average user experience in any reasonable way.

My ongoing, unscientific research indicates that AA SAAver awards are getting tougher to claim.

To everywhere, or just to the places you're looking to go on the dates you're looking to go? And are you offsetting that with the sliding-scale availability of Dynamic Awards?

I've had great luck this year.
If only dynamic awards were available for travel outside the US mainland. <sigh>

As have I. It's just getting tougher to be lucky.

We need desperately your wit (and brevity) on the Hilton board to counteract the verbosity of some others there :D

Care to expound on that? I would imagine "hey, we check each airline's website" is actually a reasonably common experience.

for entirely different routes, checked one the same dates but that will have different seasonal characteristics, and with some monkeying with the city pairs for Air Berlin.

and, you know, the results are entirely different when you pick up the call.

and counting dynamically priced awards for low cost carriers while only saver awards for the legacies is fair. ;)

Those results aren't included in the IdeaWorks report

The gist of it is that they pick certain routes (I believe it is top NN per carrier or something like that) and then search for award inventory only using the website some number of months in advance. No partner award inventory online (hello, US)? Bad score, even though the inventory is nearly identical to that available for UA points as for US points. Are you a carrier where that seasonal search is low season so more seats are available on your top routes? Watch your score rise. Those are just a couple of the flaws in the system.

All such searches are going to be flawed in some way. These just happen to be a few of the specific issues with this particular one.

Fair. My issue is that they materially overclaim. The study does not say what they say it says.
