SPG is happy to announce that all SPG members who book through Starwood’s digital channels will be offered free standard in-room Internet access during their stay at all SPG participating hotels worldwide. This benefit is in addition to earning Starpoints and getting our Best Rate Guarantee when booking through Starwood channels.

Beginning February 2, 2015, free in-room Internet access will be available to SPG members who book their hotel stays through Starwood’s many digital channels including: spg.com, Starwoodhotels.com, brand websites, mobile sites, the SPG app or through a travel professional, who books on spg.com. Here is how it breaks down for each tier:
    • Preferred members will receive standard in-room Internet access and have the ability to upgrade to the highest tier of internet, where available, for an incremental charge.
    • Gold members will receive the highest level of Internet access available as well as a welcome gift choice of Starpoints or complimentary beverage.
    • Platinum members currently receive the highest level of in-room Internet access.
Visit spg.com/internet for more information on receiving in-room Internet access for your next stay or a stay booked on behalf of your clients.

What travel professionals book through SPG.com certainly not biz travelers... Concur, CWT, Amex travel, etc.

Looks like Golds make out like a bandit here. As a Plat I can say good for them. And nice to see SPG bucking the trend of Hilton et al.

However the wording could also lend a belief that Gold or Plat members who book through other channels won't receive gratis internet. Or am I reading too far into this?

Since Plats already get internet access. Wouldn't this mean a "removal" of benefits in the event that the property only provides one tier of Internet access? (In my case most properties I've stayed at only provide one tier)

Well seen, IMHO Golds are the big "winners" this time around.

SPG Pro Travel Agents Can Offer Free Internet at Starwood Hotels

Starwood Hotels and Resorts has announced that travel agents who are members of SPG Pro, Starwood's travel agent loyalty program, can offer free Internet access to their client base of Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) members when travel is booked on spg.com.
This advantage is in addition to all other SPG Pro benefits agents are already receiving if they are enrolled in the program.

Can anyone clarify for me if this applies to free night awards? If it does, what about for reservations that *must* be done by phone, such as reserving a room on points higher than the base rate? Thanks.

    Hi Sandy,

Yes, SPG Free Night Award reservations are eligible for this benefit as long as they are booked through a Starwood Website or an SPG App.

As for reservations must be booked by calling the SPG Customer Contact Center, like Upgraded Free Night Award reservations, they are not eligible for this benefit.

Thanks for your reply. It's a bummer that I always have to book award nights by phone because of needing to account for a child in the reservation, so I can't access this benefit. I would happily book online.

It didn't allow me to with the St. Regis in Rome the other day. Had to book one level up (deluxe) to allow for 3-person occupancy. Am I doing something wrong?

If you are saying that you had to book an upgraded room type as an award at this property to get a room that would allow three persons, no. The standard rooms at this property allow two occupants only. And those can only be booked via the Customer Contact Center, so they would not be eligible for this benefit.
