I'm looking to book a flight from the USA to Europe in early 2013, I was wondering how does the economy product compare b/w United, US, Lufthansa, Swiss and TAP?.

I can fly out of PHL, EWR or even JFK (ease of accessibility in that order).

    Thanks!

If you qualify (or buy access), United EconomyPlus will provide you with several more inches of legroom compared to most others. I'd advise that you compare seat pitch on a site like SeatGuru.com, because legroom varies not only by airline, but by aircraft model on each airline....

For US - a lot of it depends on the type of plane. The A330s have all been refreshed. There are some old pictures of the A330s with the "then best-in class AVOD" which looks very dated now. The new slimline seats leave a generous amount of legroom and the new screens and avod entertainment are great. US surprisingly still provides blankets on overnight flights. The 757 and 767 economy product is pretty basic, chair, overhead screens and typical airline food.

Early 2013 that is bookable now is likely low season. Why not take a gander at the off peak Envoy tickets to Europe at the time you're looking to travel. Combined that with the 100% mile promotion, you could get quite a good deal.

I would go with SWISS regardless. But then again, I am biased like that.

One more * partner to add to the list is the Singapore A380 out of JFK to FRA.

Does Swiss have video in seat backs or drop down? How is the space compared to Lufthansa and the American carriers?

Great tip... haven't talked things over with the fiancé/ soon to be wife about where we want to go yet and depends on the budget. I'm just trying to get a feeler out early so I can research more and more as time gets closer. Thought this was a good place to start.

Also, she is a teacher so we wouldn't be able to leave until June... I guess that isn't really "early 2013" as I stated in my OP. And I'm sure June isn't off-peak...

There's your winner, right there. Not sure it's really even close.

Just to confirm... I can't book economy plus on UA with an award ticket if I don't have status on UA?

One more * partner to add to the list is Brussels Airlines (SN) A330 out of JFK to BRU.

Is it because Swiss tend to keep good time?

It's not only the good time, but it also has to do with comfort onboard, the crew, friendliness of staff, Zurich airport and that feeling of being in safe hands.

That's all very well, but do you get to eat cheese fondue?

I like the TP A330 that runs EWR-LIS, mainly because it seems that J fares are relatively inexpensive and the timing works out very well--and with a 1-2 day layover in LIS, one can stay at the Corinthia or the Radisson Blu for relatively good rates.

IMO, transiting LIS is far easier than FRA as now all TP connections are contained in T1 and the lounge is by far one of the best I've been to as it is hardly crowded and the agents are willing to work on your itinerary if needed.

And, if you are in Tap|Executive and Tap|Plus, there are dedicated check-in counters in a separate area of T1.
