Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. Especially considering AQ's musings mostly involved doing something to the rails, nothing inside the cars.

What can the train marshal do in that situation? Get up from his/her first-class seat, put down the $7 Harlequin Romance book bought from the Hudson News store and shoot at the rails?

Just more proof that the hard, more tangible, work by the Government is done behind the scenes, and not on the front lines (against what the DHS and TSA would like you to believe).

And totally useless. About once a week the "man vs. train" battle occurs somewhere in the country, the train hasn't been defeated in decades if ever. Those are mostly people that did not want to make contact with the train and gained access to the tracks. If some one actually wanted to get make contact with a train there are several hundred thousand miles of unmonitored rail to do so.

Add to all this that, at least on the northeast corridor, uniformed Amtrak police (often with K9 units) are already aboard the trains. What more could a 'train marshall' possibly do?

You're not thinking grand enough. They could look at your drivers license under black light. They could inspect all your stuff. They could make you go through an X-ray scanner. Think of the mouthwatering possibilities for TSA expansion!
