What are the differences between the two on how direct the routing has to be? For example, I figure that MAN-FRA-BOS-PHX-SFO might be a problem for one or both.

United will allow you to fly 15% over the 'maximum permitted mileage' for a route. MPM for MAN-SFO is 6387, so 15% over is 7345.

MAN-FRA-BOS-PHX-SFO is 7138 miles. So United should allow this routing.

Continental doesn't apply the MPM concept to awards, it's whatever you can get an agent to build and the sytem to price ;)
