Here's a question for the locals.

On Sunday July 17, I plan(ed) on driving between Costa Mesa and Santa Ynez (just north of Santa Barbara). I planned on taking the 405 to the 101. Since the 405 will be closed, my alternate route was to take the 5 to the 134 to the 101. What's your opinion? Push comes to shove, I don't have to drive up there.

What about taking the 5 to the 118, then south on the 23 to the 101? A little out of the way, but I'll be avoiding the
    traffic (?)

The problem is that section of the 101 gets rather crowded at the best of times so I hate to think how it might be with the roadworks on 405 pushing everyone into alternative routes.

I'd vote to stay home and go another time.

I'd give very serious thought to going significantly out of your way -- heading north to the 210, then taking it to the 118 to the 23 to the 101 and avoiding most of LA entirely.

Carmageddon has started, and the streets are pretty empty. Good news for tonight, but as people get wind of this, they might get it in their heads to go out on the roads tomorrow. I would go as RichardInSF described above, and I think you should be OK, since the 134 to the 101 might be cutting it a bit too close to where most of the re-routed traffic will be heading. And I'm not sure what kind of snags you'll hit at the 101/405 interchange, which you would cross if took the 134 to the 101.

It's all over, the 405 was re-opened on Sunday at noon and there was no carmageddon!

What a waste of my time. All that worrying for nothing. I flew up using the 5/134/101 to Santa Ynez.

But now I want details of where you stopped and what you drank.

    Fair question.

Tercero tasting room in Los Olivos.
    Cold Heaven in Buellton.
Curran at the winery (she has a tasting room in Solvang).
