Long time lurker - first time poster. I figured I would start by posting a review on a stay I had on the first week of July of this year in Cleveland. To start off I went to Cleveland for a conference for work. The conference was being held at the Renaissance downtown and the company who wss hosting had secured a rate of $139 a night. Seeing that we wanted to be in the hotel where it was being held - decided to stay there. I knew it was an older hotel - but that always kind of interests me. So I went through the conference website and booked two rooms one for me and one for our owner. In the special requests section I inserted - 'Platinum member : please upgrade.' We flew from Missouri to Cleveland. I did some research and found that the metro in Cleveland runs from the airport directly to the complex where the hotel is. So when we got off the plane went to the subway and paid $2.50 per person one way and in about twenty minutes we were at the mall. The Renaissance is located in the nothwest corner of a historic building that has been converted to a shopping mall. In the complex there is a Renaissance, Ritz Carlton, about 100 stores, and a Harrahs casino. It reminds me of Union Station in Saint Louis circa early 90's. So we go upstairs to the lobby and its old world charm with a modern day spin. We walk through the lobby and head to designated Awards Member line. The team member checking us in after hearing my name said - 'I see your reservation and you are attending XXX Conference. Also I noticed you are a Platinum Member with Marriott and I would like to let you know we have upgraded your rooms for your stay.' I thanked him and finished the check in process which took no more than five minutes. I was off to my 'upgraded' room. When I got off the elevator and went down the hallway I had to do a double check on the room number.... 'uh that's a double door - am I in the right place?' I said to myself. I walked in and was immediately blown away. A Jacuzzi suite - 1.5 baths - conference table - Double Shower - floor to ceiling marble in the bathroom - plus a great view of downtown.... The rack rate of the room was $750 a night - not bad for just placing a simple phrase in the special comments section. The hotel is nice - if you enjoy older styles and historic places - this is a hotel for you. The hotel is showing its age, the elevators are slow and very small, the carpet could be replaced, and the hardware is dated. Downtown Cleveland is okay - it was nice being attached to Harrahs but other than that there isn't a whole lot. We arrived on a sunday and most of downtown was quiet. All in all i would stay here again - if I was with friends and my wife. It was quiet without people to enjoy the suite. I have attached some pictures. Hope you all enjoy them. Hope my first post was decent. Thanks!
