I hope chchkiwi whom I've met in Christchurch, New Zealand and who was kind enough to show me around the CBD and the outlying areas is OK and was not terribly affected by this misfortune.

Watching the coverage on BBC right now and even though it was not as big on a Richter scale as the last one, the epicenter was much closer to city center and the CBD seems to be in ruins now.

All the best to all our friends on the south island of NZ!

I haven't heard from yankiwi yet, but I'm sure she has higher priorities.

More active discussion on MP on another thread.

USGS is showing this to be a rather shallow quake. I suppose that's why the damage was significant.

Chchkiwi reported on Facebook that she was in the Koru Lounge in Christchurch when the temblor hit. The airport closed immediately and she got rebooked on the special 747 leaving probably today. Her later report stated that the sewage pumping stations are out so toilets cannot be flushed, water apparently is not flowing which makes the first point mute and the TV fell over and broke into pieces. So they are on the way out. Unfortunately, she did not say where they are headed.

BTW: in normal FT fashion, she stated that they had provided her with an upgraded seat in business class for the special flight. An earthquake? upgrade, yes!
