Perhaps he tried to rob a convenience store dressed as Gumby to get the money for an engagement ring. <resisting urge to make carat pun>

what do you mean, something got lost in translation? :p

pretty ingenious! not as exciting as proposing on the PA system at an SMD3, but still have to give props to the guys proposal. ;)

now, as for the new airport - is this in addition to operating the current Capital airport (which is almost at capacity)?

and will include 9 (1 for military) runways!

wow, that's going to be huge! (but more importantly, how nice are the lounges going to be! :D)

OK, I'm delusional, but this is beginning to sound to me a bit like the the same mega-construction complex that has nearly bankrupted smaller places. It would be a lot more reasonable to plan a second (and, if required, even a third) airport to divide the traffic up. That's what you see in virtually every other big city worldwide, and I suspect it's for a good reason.

Could it be that those other cities don't have the space or the ability to create the space (flatten neighborhoods/cities) for a single larger airport?

But I agree with the mega construction complex concern...

The present Bejing Capital Airport is, for China standards, as mess. Transfers between terminals are by overcrowded busses on public streets and often take an hour or so. If we were in the third world like the US, UK etc that would be OK. But this is China! I think they'll pull it off, just as they have done in many other difficult areas. I also think they will need it.

It already is in use in limited ways for bilateral trade between some countries including both Brazil and Argentina, and the further internationalization of the yuan/renminbi is happening right now, but in a quite controlled way.

Shanghai has done that, of course, with the SHA a brand new facility. However, China has a track record of delivering on mega-projects including high-speed rail , vast new highways, municipal transit systems and airports. There have certainly been scandals, but not too much compared with most of the world, and late, in China is like the Lijiang-Shangrila highway and trains, both of which are behind schedule by nearly a year, or having a train accident almost immediately get the railway chief sacked. Corruption exists but nothing on the scale of many places.

Disclosure: of course I am thinking about Brazil, partly, and the US too, both of which are superb examples about how not to do things.

While its true the Chinese tend to love mega constructions works and they do have their fair share of white elephants..... given the expected growth in the domestic air travel market, it woudl seem that another mega airport is needed....

Perhaps I should retrain as a pilot and go to work in China....???

While China seems to have a lot of new airports, they tend to be located a long and expensive taxi ride from downtown cities, sometimes without convenient public transportation even for those without much luggage. Planning for growth is good, but it seems to be at the expense of present users.

That if they dont get killed in the process. When I was last in Bejing while travelling from the airport on the huge new 6 or 8 lane highway from the airport we observed at least six drivers who had missed an exit reversing in various lanes to boot at full tilt to the get back to the missed exit. Taxi driver told my horriified wife " new drivers, new road"

Lets hope the new airport has more proper toilets had to wait at while to get one of the flushing types all available where "holes in the floor" this at then new Bejing airport.
