This combination has never really appealed to me, I couldn't really imagine it.

I was recently at a brunch (Frontier Restaurant in Chicago http://www.thefrontierchicago.com/food/ ) where I had fried rabbit & waffles. To quote the description from the Frontier menu: Southern Style Fried Rabbit, Cornmeal Waffle, Spiced Pear Butter, Habanero Maple Syrup.

What a combo! I thoroughly enjoyed this dish.

Any other fans of fried (insert protein here) & waffles? If so, where did you have it?

I think it's really being able to justify pouring syrup all over fried food. My friends who eat it mainly say they enjoy the syrup with the chicken more than the chicken and waffles.

I thoroughly disagree. It's all about eating the fried chicken in alternating bites from the waffles giving you the savory and sweet. Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles in LA is a great spot.

Never crossed my mind to have meat on top of a waffle. Something new to me.

I've had bacons and sausages as part of a combo meal with a waffle but not placed directly on top of the waffle to be eaten together so this doesn't count.

I keep hearing about Roscoe's, but I never went even when living in So Cal. Most fried chicken isn't very good IMO (when it's good, though, it's really good.) And I'm not a syrup fan, even when I eat pancakes or waffles. I hope there's a point other than putting syrup on top of chicken. Maybe I'll try it the next time I visit LA.

Is there an easy way (ala a parking/hotel shuttle) to get to Roscoe's from LAX?

I heard rumor there was but a Google search combined with my ignorance of LA geography couldn't find one.

According to Google closest one is about 11 miles from LAX, presumably accessible by bus, train, foot, bus in about an hour. It's not in the greatest neighborhood, sort of between Inglewood and Watts. But you'd have a chance to see the Watts Towers and maybe a shooting or two. (Google map directions LAX to 106 Manchester Blvd. Los Angeles and walk the little yellow man around the side streets.) Looks like it's $16.10 from their 2009 menu for half a chicken and a waffle,, but they must have smaller portions, and they don't mention if they're serving Aunt Jemima or real maple syrup. I would just dump syrup on some KFC :)

If you are in HNL you have to try the Chicken and Waffles at the hole in the wall called Pancakes and Waffles about 10 minutes from the airport (1284 Kalani St) .

While you are there, run across the parking lot to Sugoi's and pick up a Garlic Chicken plate lunch. That is all the Hawaiian gourmet that you will need on your next MR to the islands.

    :D

There's no easy way to Roscoe's from LAX via a hotel parking shuttle.... it's a drive/taxi or a convoluted mix of buses, not something to do if you just have a layover at LAX. The prices aren't ridiculous and if I remember correctly, it's around $11 for 2 pieces of chicken and waffles.

For those who don't know, it's not a place to go just because they serve friend chicken with waffles. It's good because both components on their own are tasty and having the opportunity to consume them in one sitting just makes it that much better. Is the friend chicken as good as Gus's in Memphis, heck no... but they are pretty darn good and in no way should it be compared to KFC.

Maybe it's a South vs. West Coast thing.

Charlotte has 2 places that regularly serve Chicken and Waffles:
Bricktops across from SouthPark serves chicken fingers with waffles for Sunday Brunch.
Midnight Diner in South End serves fried chicken on the bone with Waffles.

Thanks lili & RestlessLocationSyndrome for the, albeit disappointing, confirmation.

I think I saw Manchester Roscoe's but was hoping there was a closer location that I had somehow missed.

agreed, between the crispy skin, flavor of the meat, with the sweet from the syrup & waffle, delicious:D
let me know when you are thinking of going. With AA's DEQM in Q1 2012, I'll be visiting LA more than a few times.

As an undergraduate student in Maryland, my college served chicken and waffles once per week - the food-service contractor was from "the south".

I first had chicken and waffles at Datz in Tampa, FL. It was a surprisingly good combination. My next mission is to track down the chicken and waffle truck in Orlando and try their take on the dish.

I saw that, I must admit I'm curious after enjoying SoCo recently.

A longtime friend was flying into town, he was always a big SoCo fan (I never really was) suggested we have drinks (with the SoCo he knows has been sitting in my bar forever). He asks me to pick up limes before I pick him up at the airport. When we get back to my bar, he proceeds to pour shots of SoCo with the fresh squeezed lime juice in them. Let's just say the two bottles I had are gone, as the lime juice & SoCo was pretty darn tasty.

Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland pretty much blows all the rest out of the water. The waffles are incredible, and the chicken is cooked to order.

Hash House A Gogo in LV offers the following:
    Sage Fried Chicken & Waffles

Two sage fried chicken breasts with hardwood smoked bacon waffle tower, hot maple reduction and fried leeks
Bring a friend... its a big pile of food.

Their San Diego location doesn't seem to offer it.
