Chicago Rockford International Airport embraces ‘leisure’ concept

    Gates have been the vacation portals for travelers at Rockford’s airport, but starting next week getaways can begin before fliers reach the plane.

    Sandbar, a beach-style bar offering food and drinks to ticketed passengers, will open Friday near departure gates at Chicago Rockford International Airport.

    The bar will be operated by CC Concessions, which leases space from the airport where vacation branding will extend to airport workers and 50 volunteers for this vacation season who will wear relaxed shirts that look straight from the islands.

    “We’re embracing the concept that we’re a leisure airport,” said Mike Dunn, director of economic development and governmental affairs at the airport, where most flights go to warm weather destinations.
