I have an upcoming Award Trip and am quite confused on what is my baggage allowance. Hoping that maybe someone can shed some light on this.

    My flights are as follows:
    • LAX - SFO (First) [UA]
    • SFO - ICN - TPE (Business) [UA/TG]
    • TPE - BKK (Business) [TG]
    • BKK - LAX (Econ) [TG/NH]
Going there I know I am fine since I get 3 bags per person because I am flying Business, on the way back however I am confused.
According to UA I am only allowed one bag, while the 2nd bag is a $70 Charge. However Since I am flying on TG/NH, both of those say I get 2 bags per person. Which is correct? Since my ticket was issued by United am I bound by their policies, or since I am flying on TG/NH, their policy applies?

    Where does the trip break?

If you check bags in at TPE or at BKK you should be subject to the rules of the carrier you are checking in with. It seems that would be TG in both cases here. At BKK you may get the NH policies based on the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) rule. NH is the MSC for BKK-TYO-LAX as they are the over-water carrier.

Not sure what breaking point you're asking so I'll list all that i can think of.

Everything going to BKK is Business.
    BKK to LAX is Economy.

LAX - SFO - ICN is on UA
ICN - TPE - BKK - NRT is on TG
NRT - LAX is on NH

I'll be checking bags in at LAX, SFO, TPE & BKK.

    LAX - SFO 12/29
    SFO - ICN - TPE 12/30
    TPE - BKK 1/3
    BKK - LAX 1/13

So you're saying I should be subject to NH policy & not United?

This is what I was getting at.

That's how I understand the rules.

Is there a way to verify this? Do I call into United? (I'm trying to avoid calling in to UA right now) I'm planing on bringing 3 bags there and 4 back ... (between 2 ppl) but if there is a charge that will change our plans and prolly just be 3 there/back.

I just called Thai to see if they knew, and they stated they follow UA policy, since they're the issuing carrier.
