I am a college student and really looking to get a CHASE UNITED MILEAGEPLUS EXPLORER CARD
    because I travel overseas 2 3 times a year
Here are the cards from my wallets and date I acquired them

    BofA Cash Rewards $700 (12/2011)
    Discover More $1,500 (7/2012)

No baddies or loans since '11
    Fico TU 730 (7/2012)
How long should I wait until I should give it a try?

    Any advice appreciated!

So you have baddies after '11? with a 730 you should be able to get it. I would try.

I've never had a baddy in my life, I meant.
Since I just got my Discover Card, I think I need to wait a couple months.
But idk for how long...I wanna get it on my first try

so your credit file started in 2011 is what you're saying?

That's ... very short. But since Discover/Chase don't share data it doesnt really matter how long you wait because all the data in your credit file (a short one) will say that you have 2 credit cards only with a max credit line of $2,200.00. I think when you apply you will get decision pending/decline based upon that fact alone. Then You'd have to call in and convince the agent that 1) yes your credit file is new 2) you pay your bills on time and have no problems with that 3) hear great things about Chase and their customer service & 4) you travel intl 2-3 times a year and would like a more rewarding credit card for your travels. (Prolly should mention that you fly UA even if you don't). They'll probably ask you for your income level etc ... and possibly approve you.

However ... my understanding is that Explorer is a Visa Signature ... which I think require a CL of at least $5,000. So they will be taking a chance with you.

Apply & be prepared to call them.

    Good Luck

    Thanks for your information!
Do you think setting up a checking acct might help? How about a savings or CD?

Is it more urgent to get more cards to raise total CL or since the credit file is short I should just be patient?

I'd wait until your credit file is two years old, call in for increases on your cards. If that's successful, wait for the increases to report, then apply for the new card.

This card has a targeted offer now for up to 65,000 miles AND a $50 statement credit. I took the bait. You must be registered for the UA mileage program. If you think your application can succeed, this is a great offer.

@gaodiaochuji: Did you get it? I think your credit file is too thin (new) to get this particular card, but you never know with Chase. It's worth the hard credit pull to find out though.

I am interested in getting the United Explorer Card after finding the link for 50K miles still works. I also want to recommend this card for friends who have had Continental, Explorer, and Mileageplus cards in the past. Does anyone know the rules about which cards are considered "new" and therefore bonus eligible? Only thing i could find so far was on the continental plus at time of merger with united.

I have a question regarding the new United Mileage Plus
Explorer Card. I am interested in the benefits provided by
the card that are above and beyond my Mileage Plus Select
card. With this being a different product am I eligible to
receive the current sign on bonus up to 65k miles, etc
with this card or does being a prior cardholder even a
different product eliminate my eligibility for that?

i came to the us in 2010 as student .had my first BoA(since i was banking with them) visa in 2011 with a 3 days "old" SS number lol with a small $1000 limit.applied for an AA citi visa but got denied-newbie mistake.later got the boA increased to 7.5k.
about 8 months later applied for the Amex PR Gold and got approved instantly(with spending availability around 20k).bulit up a little history -about 6 months- with amex than applied for SPG,chase British airways and United on the same day.the only thing i needed was giving a call to chase to verify my address.all of them approved...
    copy/paste for wifey:)

next churn is coming up in november.will see if I'm gonna be able to get a Platinum amex and a Ch Sapphire Preferred with a credit history shorter then two years...maybe ill have a little chat with the reconsideration line lol:)

    Thank you for your information
How did you get your BofA CLI'ed from 1K to 7.5K?
It's seems like almost a miracle to have that kind of increase nowadays

got an increase 3 times.first to 2,5k ,after that to 5k then to 7,5k.just applied online ,filled in the amount i wanted and never had an issue.of course u can't do big jumps at the beginning.just go safe little by little....
i see u only have 700 so i wouldn't try anything bigger than 2,5 k.pay your balances before your cycle ends so both the revolving credit and utilization stays low .it builds up your credit score pretty fast so you can go for the big ones relatively fast...

I also new to all this. Got my SSN in 10/2010. No cards at all and I applied to many cards, including PayPal debt card. Knew nothing about the miles world. Anyways, by 12/2011 had more then 10 inquires. Applied for both 75k citi n got denied. Applied to Chase Sapphire Preferred in 12/2011 and got approved with CL of $5700. Waited 4 months and reapplied to both citi, now with only 50K bonus and got approved instantly for both with CL of $6000 fir the Amex and $5000 for the visa. Waited another 3 months applied for the chase united explorer, approved after calling RL and got approved with CL of $8000, month after applied for ink plus n approved after calling rec. line n approved with CL of $5000 ( I was asked how much I wanted for my CL) also approved fur US Airwsys Barcklays with only $2500 CL.
Today, 10/8/12 my credit profile is still below 2 years average age.

I always get these fancy invitations, booklet style from United to apply, but turned down everytime I apply, even though I have good credit. Chase has been at war with me for about the past 15 years, claiming I defaulted on a credit card I had with them(which I never have). They even had the nerve to put it on my credit report which had to be removed after they could NOT prove I ever had a credit card with them. So it looks like I will never get the United Mileage card, which in short I mostly avoid flying United and fly American, since Citi and American Express give me every card I have ever applied for.

Not to downplay the issues you had with Chase but it would seem to me getting a few Chase cards for the sign-up bonuses alone would be a good way to "get one over" on Chase in a subtle way. I don't get credit cards because I like the companies I get them because I like the bonuses. In fact the one credit card I have from a company I actually like(USAA) I never use because the rewards frankly are weak.
