Demoted my sapphire when the annual fee came due and needed to destroy the old card. After a pair of office scissors proved ineffective, I brought it home to face the blowtorch. Results here:

Not good enough! If you look closely, you can still make out part of my name. On the back, the numbers are still legible, so no pictures of that! I remembered some early debate about what the card was made of, but don't know if the issue was ever conclusively resolved. Well, I can, with confidence, say that the core is metal and the skin is plastic. I heated it red hot, with the result you see here.

P.S.: It was kind of fun.

P.P.S.: Ack. Image won't load. I'll fix it tomorrow.

    P.P.P.S: Fixed!

Will I get in trouble if I nail mine to a brick and throw it off the Golden Gate bridge?

Yeah it might get swallowed by one of the sea lions..whose body washes up on shore and they find your card in his stomach at the necropsy.
Whats the fine for endangering sea lions again?:D

Can't wait to see the photos; I've wondered about future disposal efforts. I probably wouldn't have considered a blowtorch though!

Amazing that the office scissors didn't even make a visible impression!

Keep that in mind if you're ever marooned on a desert island!

When the time comes I plan on calling the Amex concierge line and asking them to take care of it.

I believe Chase will send you an envelope to return expired/unwanted cards for proper disposal. I was offered this service recently for the United Mileage Plus Club card.

What will the future archeologist (ape? terrestrial dolphin? big-headed human?) think when he digs up this strange metal placard inscribed with inscrutable characters? Is it a totem? Burial marker? Wreckage from an alien spacecraft? Hey, that's it! maybe the Roswell crash was just an attempt to destroy extraterrestrial Sapphire cards!

Wow, be all logical and practical, why don't you. Here I was planning on surgically attaching it to the Loch Ness Monster to ensure no one would ever be able to find it, but I guess now I'll just mail it on in.
