Feel free to post any experiences you have had with Channel 9. Also feel free to include chats with the crew, etc..

    I'll start:

    2/2 UA738 DEN-MCO B752 ^ and announcement from Captain

My favorite channel 9 (in fact entire intercom pilot talk was on 1/25/11 on UA891 into NRT when the pilot came on and said:

Well, Once again science and technology have triumphed over fear and superstition and we have brought you safely to Narita. etc. etc."

Kind of nailed what a lot of people were thinking I belive and I have not had a good chuckle like that from a pilot in a while.

Channel 9 is the mystery channel for me, it hardly ever shows up and even on the few occasions when it does, it sometimes totally disappears mid-flight. Kind of sad that the pilots have chosen to punish customers like me who like it by doing that, especially since it's totally unclear exactly what point they are trying to make.

I've had good luck with it being on if I see the flight crew and mention it, telling them something along the lines of "geeks like me love to listen along". Usually gets a chuckle and a "see what I can do" which more often than not results in it being on. A few times, I've encountered a not so receptive pilot, but at least I've made a case for it.

Thought there was a convention that
    thumbs up meant on
thumbs up thumbs up meant on with announcement.

By the way, ^ doesn't seem to translate here. Must
be a code that this board doesn't support?

2/6 UA550 DEN-MCI A319 ^ ^ (announced multiple times by the Captain). I thanked him on my way out, and he said "My pleasure!" :)

  9. On Wednesday, it wasn't on for SEA-SFO. It also wasn't on for ORD-IAH last Sunday, unfortunately.

    1/30 237 PIT-SFO ^^
    1/30 469 SFO-LAS ^^
    2/2 791 LAS-DEN ^^
    2/2 648 DEN-PIT ^^

Four in a row! That's my biggest streak to date. Sometimes it was the captain that announced it, sometimes it was one of the FAs. Nothing too funny, just some jokes about the weather on the 2/2 flights, since it was in the middle of the big storm.

I'm not thrilled with the legacy CO fleet not being able to have 9 for cost reasons. I flew a total of five lifetime segments on legacy UA, but I think it's just great in principle to hear what the flight deck is up to.

    A hat-trick plus one :)

UA756 SFO-DEN :) (knew the Purser and asked her. She said the Captain said "no" during the briefing but she said "let me ask again because of you" and she she came back with a "the Captain said yes"
    UA266 DEN-MIA :) (no announcement)
UA485 MIA-DEN :) (Captain was saying hi to the pax in F and I asked him if Ch9 would be on where he replied, "would you like it on?" I said yes if it was ok with him where he replied, "you got it!"
    UA423 DEN-SFO :) (announced by the captain)

I understand that installation is a trivial change for the CO widebody fleet. It's n:(t likely to happen at all for the 737 fleet with DirecTV. That system does not support external audio inputs.

In 8 p.s. flights between SFO and JFK this year, Channel 9 was on all but one!

Pretty great odds! Although I unfortunately flew Delta last night which was a bummer since SFO was operating on the 10s -- so rare, would have loved to hear the tower queue us up for 10R departure!

I flew from IAD - ZRH and then back on the same route and the Captain didn't turn it on. I asked if he might turn it on and was told he said no. My flight IAD - MEX same issue. Let's see what next week's IAD - LHR holds for Channel 9. I am hoping it's on.

Sometimes it's that simple. If you don't ask, you don't get.

If true, then UA should move on this yesterday. This is the kind of change "I think we'd like."

I would agree. I'm m:eek:re concerned with the loss of Ch9 on the narrowbody aircraft if/when DirecTV is installed. It's not clear to me that any decision has been made yet with regard to Ch9.

If you like Channel 9 avoid DEN and 757s.
I had tremendous luck on my last 50+ trips with Ch 9. Then I went on a mileage run with daily connections in DEN on a 757. DEN based 757 cockpit crews are not Ch 9 friendly. They are vehemently opposed to it and let me know in no uncertain terms. Every time I stuck my head into the cockpit to inquire in a very friendly tone if Ch 9 would be on, the answer would be a stern "not on my flights", "Channel 9 will be off with me" to a "Of course not". When I politely asked to maybe reconsider I feared that they would throw me off the flight. BTW, had absolutely no problem on the Airbuses.

Today UA PS flight JFK-SFO. Asked the FA before taxi if the pilot would -please- turn on channel 9. Waited and waited and waited. Nothing. But it wasn't the pilot's fault. The FAs hadnt turned on the audio feed to the cabin. As soon as we were aloft they turned the system on and there was channel 9. Arrrgh!
